The Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball team broke its single-game record for the most turnovers committed this season with 22, securing the Broncos downfall to Stanislaus State 70-53 Feb. 12.
CPP came into the game with a 12-10 overall record, and 7-9 conference record, tied for sixth place with three other teams, Stanislaus State being one of them. The Broncos broke their previous turnover record by one point set against Cal State San Bernardino Jan. 15. This loss dropped the Broncos to seventh ranked in the league putting them in a precarious position heading into the playoffs.
“I thought we had a good spirit, especially the first half,” head coach Greg Kamansky said. “But we had too many turnovers and with 22 turnovers you’re not going to win a game in this league.”
Forward Kevin Simeth won the tipoff, giving the Broncos the first possession of the game. Thirty seconds into the game, guard Malcom Bell collected an offensive rebound and netted a putback layup for the match’s first points.
The Warriors opened their scoring with two points from the charity stripe from guard Lloyd French.
The Broncos stayed toe-to-toe with the Warriors for the first five minutes of the half, steadily exchanging points. As turnovers increased, the Broncos fell behind.
Despite shooting 1-8 from behind the arc and 9-24 from the field, the Broncos trailed by only nine points going into the second half with a score of 38-29. Bell led the team with 10 points and five rebounds, followed by Simeth and guard Zach Broadous with four points.
The Broncos found a new intensity to attack the rim as they began the second half. Simeth kicked it off with back-to-back layups bringing the score to 41-33. He also had to contend with double teams due to him scoring a high of 12 points. The increased defensive pressure brought a halt to the Broncos’ offensive momentum.
After a few defensive stops, it was all about the offensive for the Warriors. Going on a 25-14 run across 12 minutes of play, shooting 4-7 from behind the arc during that span.
“We play maybe 10 second offense…turnover,” said Simeth. “We have to spin back. And it’s just, it doesn’t help us offensively as well.”
The gap grew between the two teams, resulting in a final score of 70-53. Bell led the Broncos in the game with a total of 17 points, adding on nine rebounds and two steals.
The Broncos have five games left before the quarter finals. They now hold a 13-11 overall record and sit at 8-10 in the California Collegiate Athletics’ Association.
“I think for the most part, it’s just slowing down and trusting each other to make the right play and make the right pass,” Bell said. “Just playing our offense and trusting it.”
