New chrome extension shows professor ratings in BroncoDirect

By Kenna Jenkins, May 12, 2026

A Cal Poly Pomona student made a Chrome extension that allows students to view a professor’s Rate My Professors rating directly through their BroncoDirect when searching forclasses.

The extension called BroncoSort shows professor ratings, provides the link to their Rate My Professors page and lists professors from highest to lowest rating for classes taught by different instructors. Leonardo Gamboa, a computer science student, said he originally made the extension for personal use.

“Every time at registration, I would (have) like a million tabs open, and I just felt like there should be a better way to just do it and not have a million tabs open,” Gamboa said. “So, I was trying to think of way that I could integrate Rate My Professors into the registration portal, and then I decided to make a Chrome extension.”

Gamboa said coding the extension in Java Script took a few days, along with some help from AI to see if it was possible. After encouragement from friends, Gamboa said that’s when he decided to make the extension public.

Gamboa posted on r/CalPolyPomona, CPP’s main Reddit forum, April 16, sharing news of the extension and a download link. Gamboa also made a TikTok showing how to use the extension on BroncoDirect.

“I think there’s definitely some bias to (Rate My Professors),” Gamboa said. “But at the same time, there’s not really any other website students can use that’s going to be 100% accurate, and I feel like at the end of the day, everyone is still going to use it.”

Sarah Huynh, a friend of Gamboa and also a computer science student, said Rate My Professors is a tool she uses consistently when registering for classes. Huynh said she feels it’s given her a fairly accurate understanding of professors and how they run their class, even though she acknowledges professors might not feel the same way because they know the process of building and running a class.

Katie Daniels, an associate professor of sociology, said while she used Rate My Professors as an undergraduate student, she found it unreliable. After talking with other people, Daniels said she realized some of the best professors they had did not have the best scores.

While Daniels said she has a high rating on Rate My Professor, she also noted she doesn’t have many comments. Daniels said students who have had a negative experience are more likely to leave comments on Rate My Professors, which creates a bias toward negative feedback.

“I have concerns that students are going to rely entirely on Rate My Professors to choose their course, and I think that would be a bad thing,” Daniels said. “I think students will end up missing out on some really great professors that might be more challenging.”

Daniels added students who might be using Rate My Professors to find professors who might give them an easy A are missing out on the growth they experience during their undergraduate education.

“I think honestly with this extension, a lot of people will benefit from(BroncoSort),” Huynh said. “There’s so much manual labor going into searching up a professor, then reading all the reviews and then deciding whether we want to take that class or not, and with Leo’s extension, it’s all just shown on that one page.”

Daniels said there is value in looking at both positive and negative comments on Rate My Professors, not just the rating, because even though the extension links to the professor’s Rate My Professors page, only the rating and total number of comments appear in BroncoDirect.

Gamboa said any future updates will be posted on his TikTok page, on r/CalPolyPomona and CPP’s Instagram Schools which is feature Meta added in 2025 that allows students from the same universities to connect in a private space on the platform.

The GitHub repository, which is where someone can store their code, files and file revision history, can be found here.

Gamboa said he’s currently working on expanding the extension to work with CPP’s Schedule Builder.
