Valentine’s Day tips for singles

Valentine’s Day — the one day per year where people like myself are reminded that they will be forever alone.

Since the beginning of January, many convenience stores have  already been filled with chocolates, flowers, teddy bears and extra-large Valentine’s Day cards for that special someone.

Personally, it is cute seeing all the lovey-dovey couples on Valentine’s Day, but I feel left out on this day because I never had someone to get me roses or a five-foot teddy bear.

Over the years, I have found different ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day single.

Celebrate with friends

You are probably not the only person who is single on this day, so a good way to spend this day is to gather some friends and go out to the movies or get some ice cream.

I have gone out with some of my girlfriends and instead of Valentine’s Day, we celebrate Galentine’s Day. Even though it is an unofficial holiday, many women take part in it as a way for ladies to celebrate ladies.

Enjoy it solo

Sometimes it is OK to take some time to yourself and enjoy it solo. I did that last year. Since Valentine’s Day was on a Wednesday last year, I had class for most of the day which kept my mind off the holiday, but afterward I had nothing to do.

I decided to enjoy the day alone, and I watched some of my favorite movies. It does not have to be a romantic comedy. It can even be a horror movie.

As a Disney lover, I watched a couple of my favorite Disney films. Watch a movie that makes you smile, laugh or even cry.

Connect with family

Spending time with family is also a good way to spend Valentine’s Day because it is a day dedicated to people you love and who love you. It is not shameful spending time with your family, as they will love you no matter if you are single or not.

If you have any pets at home, they can be good company too. Pets need to be loved too, so show them a little bit of extra love by buying them a new chew toy or cuddling with them in a blanket.

“Treat yo’self”

Valentine’s Day can be celebrated in any way that makes you happy.

Treat yourself to a trip to the salon or buy yourself that video game you have been wanting for a while.

Even your choice of clothing can be a way to empower yourself. Wear something you would not normally wear but also something that boosts your confidence. Valentine’s Day is dedicated to love, so do not forget to love yourself this time of year.

I like this quote by RuPaul on the show “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” which goes, “If you can’t love yourself, how in the Hell you gonna love somebody else?” This quote has helped me remember to always love myself and build my self-confidence.

Make this Valentine’s Day one to remember and spread the love everywhere you go.
