CPP students weigh in on California’s gubernatorial recall election

By Hannah Smith, Sept. 14, 2021

In anticipation of California’s gubernatorial recall election Tuesday, Cal Poly Pomona students shared their thoughts on the efforts to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom and the election’s importance.

Students can vote on campus at the AGRIscapes Visitors Center from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. or drop off their ballots. Mail-in ballots must be postmarked on or before Sept. 14 and received by county elections offices no later than Sept. 21.

“I personally think that Newsom shouldn’t be recalled. I think that, as of now, a more Democratic standpoint is better for our country, and I do believe in the mask mandate and all that.”

“Everyone has their own opinions about everything so I think just to make good choices so we can have a good generation (is important).” We need to care more about other people.”

“I just know that they (California Republicans) are trying to recall Newsom and I know that I am planning to vote ‘no.’ I don’t really see a good reason to recall him.”

“I didn’t hear much about him (Gavin Newsom); I heard some things that he did that are not really good for California and that’s why they (California Republicans) want to recall him. I’m not really into politics, so I’m not sure about a lot of the bad things he did, but I don’t like the increase in taxes, especially the gas.”

“I just turned 18 so now I legally can vote, but I am still a little stuck because honestly I feel like I don’t know enough to vote yet. I feel like I should vote, but at the same time I don’t know enough to go and do that. I feel like there’s a lot going on politically in the atmosphere and it’s pretty stressful for a lot of people.”

“I’m not really impressed with any of them (other candidates). I don’t think it’s a good idea to recall (Newsom) in the first place since we already have bigger things to worry about than recalling a governor. He has done things that are kind of ‘iffy,’ but I think it’s best to worry about everyone’s health and making sure everyone gets a vaccine.”
