School spirit groups bring the cheer

The Broncettes, Bronco Cheer Team and the Bronco Pep Band are the backbone of school spirit at CPP.

These three groups come together bringing their passion and charisma to create memorable experiences for Broncos in athletics and events such as the Pumpkin Festival, Welcome Week and Homecoming.

“Wherever there is spirit or hype involved, we [the Bronco Pep Band] are there,” said Viral Shukla, third-year food and science student and Bronco Pep band director.

The band rehearses on Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. outside the Kellogg Arena.

“There are no requirements [and] no experience is needed to join the band,” Shukla said.

Any student who has the time and an interest in music “who wants to be a part of the force” can participate in the Bronco Pep Band.

As students attend more games throughout the year, the songs the Pep Band play become recognizable and are perfect for exciting the crowd.

During volleyball and basketball games, the band also cheers for the Broncos and shows off their posters.

Once the game is over, the members of the Pep Band have Kellogg Arena to themselves for a grand finale where they play their instruments and march in a circle.

The Bronco Cheer Squad keeps the Bronco spirit alive as well.

During games you’ll find them on the sidelines, but throughout the day they are in class just like any other student.

“[We] always try to bring positive and enthusiastic vibes to games even if that means just smiling,” said Regina Bradford, a fourth-year gender, ethnic and multicultural studies student and member of the Bronco Cheer Squad. “We try to make it exciting even if [the Broncos] aren’t winning.”

Supporting the athletic teams at games benefits the entire game-day experience.

The Broncettes dance along to the Pep Band and surely notice when there are more students in attendance at sports games.

“A bunch of people at the games [makes] a difference in the energy,” Abby Formanowicz, a third-year math major and president of the Broncettes, said.

The energy the crowd brings to the games or any event at Cal Poly Pomona creates a stronger sense of school spirit.

Pom-poms, backflips and the Cal Poly Pomona Fight Song fill Kellogg Arena with Bronco pride.

The Broncettes bring their dance moves, the Cheer squad brings its pyramids and tricks while the Pep Band supplies the music that keeps everyone going.

Anyone interested in joining these groups should visit their respective websites and bring their best Bronco spirit.
