Cal Poly Pomona Enterprises and the University Police Department are discussing extending the UPD Safety Escort Service to The Current, a student housing complex located 1.5 miles from campus, according to David Laxamana, director of student housing at CPPE.
The Safety Escort Service currently offers police accompaniment to Residence Halls and Suites, the University Village and vehicles parked on campus, according to the UPD website.
The service is available to students 24 hours a day, seven days a week, according to UPD Lieutenant Jose De Jesus Plasencia.
However, Laxamana said The Current is not included as a Safety Escort Service destination because the complex was under the jurisdiction of the Pomona Police Department until Aug. 1.
“As of August 1, we amended the memorandum of understanding we have with the UPD to include The Current,” Laxamana said. “We applied for it last year, and that MOU was not able to be activated until this year because the Pomona Police Department was retaining jurisdiction until we housed entirely students in The Current.”
CPPE acquired The Current July 2025 and has been gradually increasing safety measures around the apartment complex, Laxamana said. Resident assistant staff, supplementary security cameras and increased lighting were some of the new safety additions.
The Current residents who have to navigate safety concerns when walking home could benefit from access to the Safety Escort Service, according to Lt. Plasencia.
Lt. Plasencia said some areas between The Current and CPP require more caution, such as walking through a freeway underpass, uneven terrain, poor lighting and a lack of sidewalks.
“The Current is pretty far away from school compared to the University Village, and kind of secluded since it’s past the freeway and there’s no sidewalks,” said Riley Johnson, an RA for The Current and business accounting student. “So, I don’t think it would hurt to add the Safety Escort Service. It would definitely make students feel more safe when they’re at The Current.”
Other programs to ensure safety include the Bronco Express Shuttle, which provides a route to the University Village and The Current. However, the shuttle is not in constant service. Students can take the shuttle between 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and until 6:30 p.m. on Fridays, according to the Transportation Services website. This shuttle does not run on weekends.
Students can also use the CPP SAFE App on Android and iOS devices to share their walks with UPD or a friend, Lt. Plasencia said. The “Mobile BlueLight” feature on the app sends a response to UPD in the event of a crisis.
“RAs were taught to take full advantage of UPD, making sure that if there is an emergency, we’re not going straight to 911,” Johnson said. “We were trained on all the safety features within the department complex, including the fire alarm and help buttons.”
Residents are expected to reach out to an RA, staff or UPD in the event of an emergency, according to The Current Community Standards.
There is no expected timeline for a concrete answer surrounding the Safety Escort Service as discussions continue between UPD and CPPE. Potential fees and conditions are expected to be discussed internally, Laxamana said.
“We appreciate the patience and we’re always open to suggestions as well,” Laxamana said. “If there are requests or suggestions for specific features or services that would enhance the resident experience or increase safety, then we’re all ears.”
