The Lil’ Lion Toy Drive began as a family’s heartfelt response to a personal crisis and has grown into a communitywide effort to bring joy and comfort to hospitalized children this holiday season.
The drive, launched by local resident and Cal Poly Pomona alum,Andres Torres, aims to collect new toys, books and donations for young patients at Children’s Hospital in Orange County. The toy drive is in honor of Torres’ nephew, who has been undergoing treatment for stage four neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive cancer.
According to Mayo Clinic, Neuroblastoma is a cancer that develops from immature nerve cells found in several areas of the body. Neuroblastoma most commonly arises in and around the adrenal glands, which have similar origins to nerve cells and sit above the kidneys. Neuroblastoma often occurs in children aged 5 or older.
“My nephew’s diagnosis really opened my eyes to the impact illness has on children and their families,” said Torres, “We wanted to give back to the hospital that helped our family, and from there, the idea of a toy drive grew.”
According to Torres, the drive officially kicked off Nov. 1 and will run through Dec. 15. It accepts both new and unwrapped toys as well as monetary donations. People can donate through Venmo, which will have matched donations up to $25,000, or directly to CHOC via a special donation page.
To encourage participation, the toy drive is offering a raffle for a range of donated items, including furniture, appliances and electronics. Major sponsors, such as Martin Svensson Home, Comfort Bedding and SlumberShield, have contributed items for the raffle, which include bedroom sets, living room furniture, a Samsung vacuum and a refrigerator.
“The community response has been overwhelming,” said Torres. “We’ve already raised over $600, and we’ve received toys from local businesses and individuals. It’s been an incredible journey, and we’re grateful for everyone who has supported this cause.”
CHOC ,a renowned pediatric facility serving children all across Southern California, was selected as the recipient of the toy drive after Torres’ nephew was treated there. The hospital has a long-standing reputation for excellence in pediatric care and continues to serve thousands of children facing serious health challenges.
According to Colleen Torres, the senior associate director at the Hyundai Cancer Institute at CHOC, the hospital is dedicated to providing the best possible care for pediatric cancer patients. With a team of board-certified oncologists and oncology-trained staff, CHOC offers the latest evidence-based pediatric cancer treatments. The hospital also provides comprehensive support programs, including social, emotional and educational support, ensuring both patients and their families receive the care they need during a challenging time.
“In addition to toys, CHOC’s wish list includes educational materials, books and craft supplies for children, many of whom are hospitalized for long periods of time. Donations help provide comfort, distraction and normalcy during an often difficult and isolating experience.
Those wishing to participate in the Lil’ Lion Toy Drive can drop off donations at various locations throughout Southern California. Donations can include toys, books, games and art supplies, as well as monetary contributions. Every dollar counts, and every item donated makes a difference for a child in need this holiday season.
With new drop-off locations in Ontario and Riverside, it’s easier than ever to get involved. Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference in the lives of the children receiving treatment at CHOC’s Hyundai Cancer Institute.
