La Voz welcomes you back to another academic year dedicated to covering all things Latinidad.
At Cal Poly Pomona, where more than half of its students are Latinx, La Voz recognizes the deep cultural roots cemented throughout its campus. We are honored to produce content for a Hispanic-Serving institution, with one of the most diverse student populations in the country.
Since our first publication, La Voz has promised to tackle the lack of representation and misrepresentation of Latinx stories in mainstream media. We are more than the crime and violence told of us through non-Latinx voices.
In doing so, we aim to write stories that go beyond the challenges we face but also highlight the accomplishments we garner. CPP earned the No. 19 spot for the most bachelor’s degrees awarded to Latinos in the country during the 2019-2020 academic year.
Similarly to our counterpart student-run newspaper, The Poly Post, La Voz will provide students, faculty and staff with extensive coverage of news, arts and culture and sports through a Latinx lens. Our first two stories of the year focus on the Mexican American student association on campus and information on a new “Coco” ride coming to Disney California Adventure Park.
Our team will also expand coverage of La Voz to spotlight the abundance of Latin history within Pomona and neighboring cities such as Los Angeles. These communities have also played a significant role in shaping Southern California, from the music we listen to, the food we consume and the culture we embrace.
We plan to shed light on their contributions through thoughtful reporting and in-depth features that call attention to the many Latinx establishments, landmarks and figures that are the backbone of these cities.
We’re also pleased to announce the addition of two new translators to our team, Samantha Valdez and Mitzi Ruiz. They will ensure that every article published on La Voz, as well as top stories from The Poly Post, are accessible in Spanish. This addition reflects our commitment to inclusivity and engagement, making sure everyone in our community can get involved in every part of our content.
La Voz knows there is no shared Latinx experience as everyone experiences and expresses Latinidad in their own, unique way.
Our community is incredibly diverse. We come in different shapes, sizes, colors, regions, backgrounds and traditions, yet we all share the common desire to be heard and for others to listen.
With that said, we need to hear from you. We encourage students, faculty, staff and community members to get involved with La Voz.
