CPP students’ summer plans shine through pandemic

By Noemi Vargas, April 27, 2021

Although the pandemic canceled summer plans in 2020, Cal Poly Pomona students are beginning to replan for their summer adventures as COVID-19 cases are winding down.

According to Gov. Gavin Newsom, California will be lifting most COVID-19 regulations starting June 15. The new “normal” will provide an opportunity for students to explore the outdoors, reunite with loved ones and attend work in person.

Students met with The Poly Post to share what they are looking forward to this upcoming summer.

“This summer, I am hoping to find another internship. Other than that, I’m a type of person that does things at the moment and goes for it. My friends and I were planning on going to Vegas for my friend’s birthday and maybe Cancun later on during the summer, but that’s still a thought. We probably won’t spend as much time in the casinos. Instead, we’ll be adventuring throughout the city, like visiting some of the national parks and staying out in the open.”

“I am looking forward to taking some dance classes because we’ve been dancing at home on the computer making digital movies. Just doing all of that digitally kind of makes you learn things that you never knew that you could, and you get a really neat visual of technology with dance. That opens up a whole new world, but I missed being together in the classroom setting with other dancers working on technique and moving in a studio.”

“The first week after graduation, I’m actually flying out to New Orleans with my brother. We want to do as much as we can, like the Tabasco tour, go through the swamps, look for alligators, go to The Jazz and just walk around enjoying the nightlife. I think it would be different from how it is here in California because everything looks open, so we’ll just be out in the streets, bar hopping and listening to live music. New Orleans has always attracted us, so we’ve always wanted to go there. I already feel good being the only one or the first one in my family to graduate, so I’ll feel very well accomplished during the summer.”

“This summer I plan to celebrate my 21st birthday with my friends. We’re trying to go to Las Vegas for my birthday and get an Airbnb the entire weekend, and we’re planning to stay inside more. Once school’s done, I’ll probably focus more on my internship and work. With my schedule, I would have two days off, so for the two days I have off, I’ll be able to make some time for myself and catch up. I want to be more energized going back to school without being stressed out.”

“My original plan was to have a party for my graduation, but I didn’t think that was a very good idea to do to the circumstance of COVID. So, my mom asked me if I wanted to go travel instead.  Then, it came to Hawaii because my mom loves Hawaii and I’ve been to Hawaii, but I feel like I never got to really experience it. So, that’s why I’m going to Hawaii with my family for my graduation.”
