Summer to fall: How the transition affects CPP students

As summer ends and fall begins, Cal Poly Pomona students are enjoying the changes that come with the new season. With cooler weather and colorful leaves, many feel laid-back and ready to reconnect with family and friends. From cozy movie nights to fun seasonal events, students are embracing the joy of fall and making the most of this time of year.

For business administration student Matthew Ayala, fall is a time where everything slows down and he can embrace change because the environment is transitioning.

The slower pace of the season allows Ayala to feel relaxed, and the cooler temperatures influence his music choices and fashion. Ayala gravitates toward chill, indie pop artists like Omar Apollo and SZA.

For the fall season, Ayala’s wardrobe shifts to neutral tones, and he likes to add more layers.

“I transition to a neutral palette, which includes sherpa jackets, corduroy puffers, baggy pants and my Birkenstock clogs or Ugg Tasmans,” Ayala said.

Fall also brings a sense of excitement for seasonal activities. Ayala enjoys hosting movie nights with friends, watching Halloween classics, like Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown and attending Southern California’s famed Halloween events like Knott’s Scary Farm and the 17th Door. He also never misses the annual CPP pumpkin patch.

According to a New York Times article, as the days grow darker and colder with the holidays approaching, it’s common to feel temporary sadness, fatigue, or stress. The cold weather can sometimes make students feel less motivated, but for others, fall is about reconnecting with family and enjoying the cooler weather.  Physics student Kellan Young is excited to see his family this season. Young is looking forward to the start of the NBA season and family gatherings around Thanksgiving. He embraces everything about fall, especially since his birthday takes place in the season.

“Fall means the holidays are coming up, and I’ll be able to spend time with cousins I don’t see often,” Young said.

The season also allows him to break out his favorite hoodies and long pants after a hot summer. Young loves spending time outdoors in the cool, relaxing weather.

For geography student Elizabeth Zamora, fall is not just a signal that the year is winding down; it’s a time to embrace the season’s cozy charm and festive spirit.

“The year is coming to an end, and the bright colors of summer disappear for a while,” said Zamora.

She enjoys pulling out her sweaters and indulging in horror movies to fit the Halloween atmosphere. Fall traditions like trick-or-treating, passing out candy, and visiting pumpkin patches across Southern California bring excitement to the season.

From cozy movie nights to fun fall activities, Zamora enjoys both the excitement and the relaxation that the season brings.

“I just want to stay in bed and stay warm on rare rainy days,” Zamora said.

On clear, non-rainy days, she loves to take walks around her neighborhood to see all the fun and different Halloween decorations. For Zamora, fall is a time to cozy up, celebrate traditions, and enjoy the beauty of the season.
