Alumna Tori Rico turns business degree into career at Disneyland

Cal Poly Pomona class of 2024 alumna Tori Rico, 23, is living proof that a degree in business administration emphasizing technology and operations management can lead to some genuinely magical opportunities—literally and figuratively.

Rico, who works at Disneyland Resort Attractions and in Supply Chain Sales for RNDC’s Gallo Division, has her sights set on an exciting future in project management at the world’s most famous theme park. Her journey reflects her passion for the arts and culture industry and the practical applications of her CPP education.

Growing up loving Disneyland, Rico always knew she wanted to work in the theme parks’ creative and ever-evolving environment. She said she didn’t anticipate how her business degree would make that dream a reality. Through her time at CPP, Rico honed skills that would help her understand the logistics and operations behind running large-scale theme parks and how to collaborate with diverse teams—a key component of what makes Disneyland the immersive experience it is.

“I learned more than just the business industry and how to create a financial statement or how to code,” Rico said. “I learned how to bring together people from different backgrounds and create a project.”

One of the most valuable skills Rico acquired during her studies was collaborating with and uniting people from various disciplines. She noted that Disney operates similarly, relying on a team of creative minds to bring the magic to life.

At Disney, no project is the product of a single person’s vision, according to Rico it’s a collective effort where everyone has the opportunity to contribute. Rico’s goal is to eventually rise to a project management role, where she can oversee the creation of new lands and attractions.

“Disney does a great job at letting everyone have their input on a project and bringing those ideas together to create what it is today,” Rico said. “I want to continue this as I grow within the company.”

Rico’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. When she works at the Disneyland Resort Attractions, she interacts with guests and gains insight into the park’s day-to-day operations.

“Yes, I do have to start at the bottom and work my way up, but by working at Disney at the ground level, I see a lot of different guests and cast members, all with other stories,” said Rico.

Rico’s second role at RNDC’s Gallo Division aligns with her business background, focusing on supply chain sales. This position has allowed her to gain valuable experience managing supply and demand, which is crucial to the success of large-scale operations like Disneyland. Balancing these two roles is a testament to her dedication and work ethic.

One of Rico’s most significant challenges was balancing her workload with internships and extracurricular activities. Her older sister, Madeline Rico, recalls how her sibling’s time management skills and determination helped her push through, never giving up even when it got tough. This resilience and work ethic have been key to her success.

“Tori is incredibly driven, hardworking and adaptable,” said Madeline Rico. “She’s never been afraid to take on new challenges and always looks for ways to grow. Her curiosity and creativity also set her apart. Whether learning a new skill or taking on a bigger project, she’s never satisfied with staying comfortable.”

William Sua, Rico’s coworker, agrees.

“Tori is highly organized and has a sharp eye for detail,” said Sua. “She’s also a natural leader who can inspire and motivate the team, constantly pushing for innovative solutions.”

Sua further highlighted Rico’s calmness under pressure.

“Even when things get hectic, she maintains her composure, assesses the situation logically and finds ways to navigate obstacles without stressing the team,” Sua said.

Rico’s ability to build strong relationships is also critical to her success.

“Her creativity and ability to connect with people set her apart,” said Sua. “Tori knows how to build strong relationships with clients and her colleagues, which leads to smoother collaboration and better outcomes.”

Despite her achievements, Rico’s sister said that her sibling remains grounded.

“What stands out the most is how humble, and grounded Tori has remained throughout her success,” Madeline Rico said. “She’s always willing to help others and gives back to her community whenever possible. That’s something that truly defines her as a person and as an alumna.”

Sua echoed this sentiment.

“It’s a pleasure working with Tori,” said Sua. “She’s approachable, always willing to listen to ideas and has a great sense of humor. Even on stressful days, she keeps the atmosphere light and cheerful. Cal Poly Pomona gave her a strong foundation, but her drive and dedication have propelled her forward.”

Rico’s journey is still unfolding, and her determination to move into project management and create new and exciting attractions at Disneyland is unwavering.

“My ultimate goal is to become a project manager for Disney and create my own land at Disneyland,” Rico said.

Rico’s journey from Cal Poly Pomona to Disneyland is a testament to how far a business degree can take you—especially when combined with passion and dedication to the arts and culture industries. Her ability to merge her academic background with her love for creativity makes her a standout alumna, ready to embrace bigger career challenges.
