The United Business Student Senate hosted a free double feature movie night showing two movies, “Coco” and “The Conjuring” on Oct.21.
They held the movie night at the Cal Poly Pomona Rose Garden where they had an inflatable screen and a projector setup with a couple of blankets on the grass for students. The Senate also provided movie snacks such as popcorn and goodie bags with candy.
Members of the UBSS were warm and welcoming to everyone while they handed out goodie bags to everyone sitting on their blankets. While they waited for the sun to set so that the movie on the projector was more visible, they played some songs and asked the audience if they have any song recommendations.
After the sunset, they started to show the first movie, “Coco.” After that movie ended, they had a pause in between showings and started to show “The Conjuring,” on the big screen.
“It was a very successful event we really wanted to get our name out there and tell people to follow our Instagram,” UBSS President, Dana Nguyen, said.
She feels that not many people are aware of the UBSS at CPP because they haven’t done any fun events like these in the past due to COVID-19 restrictions.
“Not many people have heard of us before. We want to have some fun events to show people that we are here,” said Nguyen.
The UBSS provides students with opportunities to be a part of organizations in a learn-by-doing setting to learn and gain experience in a well-rounded and welcoming community. It gives students the chance to be in a leadership position in a student-run organization. They are one of eight academic councils at CPP, and they serve over twenty student organizations in the College of Business Administration.
The UBSS worked hard to bring the CPP community together during the midterm season. They really wanted students to be able to take a break from all the test-taking while also getting to know other students at social events like this one.
“We thought the Film Festival would be a good time to destress and just to get to know one another, the main thing is to reconnect everyone together after COVID,” said Executive President, Mabel Tu.
The event had a great turnout of about about fifty people who showed up and they noticed that there was a lot of mingling among students who didn’t know each other before begin talking to each other.
Emily Han, the Vice President of External Affairs said, “I want students to associate the UBSS as a community that wants to help others and be there for the whole campus.”
UBSS plans to host more social events soon so that students have a chance to connect and socialize since they couldn’t do that during the pandemic.
UBSS will be hosting another fun event like this during finals season called, “Pet Your Stress Away.” where students will have the chance to pet dogs and other animals. For more information on future UBSS events visit their Instagram at @CPPUBSS.
