‘Job’s not finished’: Women’s basketball clinch No. 1 seed over Cal State LA

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team tied its 2001 California Collegiate Athletic Association season win record after beating Cal State Los Angeles 74-70 Feb. 28.

With the Broncos’ win over the Golden, the Broncos also secured the No. 1 seed for the CCAA tournament.

Redshirt forward Hunter Hudson and junior forward Mydrea Moore controlled the offensive and defensive game for the Broncos, both recording double-doubles.

Moore broke her single-game scoring, rebound and field goal record, shooting 7-13 from the field, scoring 19 points and collecting 16 rebounds . She also tied her season-high four assists.

“Honestly, I was just in a flow state,” Moore said. “At the end of the game when someone read the stats, I kind of just dropped my jaw.”

Hudson closely followed with 14 points and 13 rebounds, shooting 7-17 from the field.

In addition to Hudson and Moore, the Broncos only played five other players, their lowest number of players used this season.

Broncos’ head coach Danelle Bishop spoke about the decision to only play seven players against the Golden Eagles.

“I think it really depends on the game,” Bishop said. “… it depends on the matchup, it depends on the physicality, and it depends on how the other players are playing … that’s all year and it won’t be any different going into the playoffs.”

Both teams came out with a high tempo in the first quarter, setting a fast-paced feeling that lasted through the entreaty of the game.

Moore and Hudson showed their dominance early in the game, earning a combined 14 points of the Broncos’ 20 in the first quarter. They also combined for seven rebounds, one block and one steal.

Senior guard Nevaeh Asiasi kept the Golden Eagles in contention during the first quarter,  getting on the stats sheet with four points, four rebounds, two steals and a block that helped the Golden Eagles to 13 points.

Asiasi also picked up two quick fouls in the first quarter, putting her in foul trouble for the rest of the game.

The Golden Eagles started to close their seven-point gap against the Broncos in the second quarter.

Golden Eagles’ junior guard Sofia Fidelus scored eight points in the second quarter, including two back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the Broncos’ lead down to 30-28 with three minutes left in the second quarter.

Broncos’ junior forward Sydney Nelson was double and triple-teamed on the ball by the Golden Eagles, a trend that continued the entire game.

This led to extra space in the paint and on the wing, which redshirt junior guard Andrea Stajic took advantage of, scoring six points in the second quarter.

The Broncos led at halftime, 36-30, but the Broncos continued to have their defense tested in the third quarter.

After a low scoring three-minute start to the third quarter, the Golden Eagles went on a 11-2 scoring run, at times overwhelming the Broncos’ defense with fast and fluid movement, claiming the lead 43-42.

Nelson and Broncos’ senior guard Alexis Woodson pulled the Broncos out of their scoring drought, combining for six points, only for Fidelus to score a 3-pointer and give the Golden Eagles a 51-50 lead at the end of the third.

With the Golden Eagles holding on to a one-point lead, both teams came out hungry in the fourth quarter.

The Broncos slowly retook their advantage in the first two minutes. Nelson, Stajic and Moore all scored to start the fourth.

The Golden Eagles kept the game within reach. Layups from sophomore guard Ariyah Smith and Asiasi, as well as a tip-in from sophomore forward Mariah Blake, had the Golden Eagles only trailing by one point, 58-57.

The Broncos then extended their lead to nine points after a clutch 3-pointer from Stajic put the score at 68-59.

The Golden Eagles attempted to stage a late comeback, with Asiasi scoring nine points in the bottom half of the fourth quarter.

However, the Golden Eagles couldn’t sore high enough as free-throws from Moore and Woodson put the game to bed for the Broncos, 74-70.

“The job is still not done,” Moore said. “We plan to continue to go all the way to the championship, but we’re taking it one game at a time.”
