Sydney Ferris joins CPP Athletics

Sydney Ferris’ passion for sports communication stems from a childhood of softball, participating in student media and finding her community through sorority culture long before entering Cal Poly Pomona’s Athletics Department.
As assistant director of athletic communications, Ferris continues to pursue what she loves, sports communication.
“I’m super excited to be here,” Ferris said. “It’s been nothing but great so far. I hope to contribute excellence in covering our teams and their accomplishments including student-athlete stories, coaches, all of the above.”
Ferris earned an Associates of Arts for communications at Mt. San Antonio Community College and a Bachelor of Arts in communications at the University of La Verne.
“I knew from a pretty young age that I wanted to work in sports,” Ferris said. “I’m a huge baseball fan. That is definitely my favorite sport, that got me into this world.”
During her time as a staff writer at ULV for both Campus Times and La Verne Magazine, she learned how to cover the university’s 18 sports, ranging from water polo to soccer.
Assistant Athletics Director of Communications Alex Kline mentioned how Ferris’ time working at ULV prepared her to be receptive and effective in her current role.
“The responsibilities of our job are pretty widespread and the biggest one being we’re at every single home event,” Kline said. “It’s a big undertaking throughout the year because we have about 100 home events a year.”
Outside of her CPP job, Ferris is a sports information graduate assistant at ULV. For both positions, Ferris said she maintains athletics websites, news, schedules, rosters, statistics, historical archives, creating graphics and social media content.
“I noticed her energy and passion for what she does,” said Pamela Donnelly, senior associate athletics director. “She has a willingness to learn about what’s new at Cal Poly and how she can help us.”
Ferris recently exhibited her strengths at fall sports media day when teams come to a studio for photos and video content, according to Kline. As teams rotated, Ferris played into her social media strengths by recording TikToks of the athletes.
“This gives us more content to work with and also elevates our overall experience,” Kline said. “She has a very genuine interest in this profession.”
Ferris’ undergrad involvement consisted of more than content creation. Being a part of a sorority on campus opened an opportunity for her to be on the executive board as a Panhellenic Delegate.
She served as a representative for sororities on campus by voting and speaking at weekly meetings.
“It was the best choice I probably ever made because I met my absolute best friends through Phi Sigma Sigma and it taught me about making connections,” Ferris said. “I wanted to get involved and make friends.”
She anticipates to graduate with her Master of Science in management and leadership from ULV in December.
“I’m a huge supporter of women in sports because it is such a male dominated field,” Ferris said. “I’m proud of myself to be a woman that works in the sports industry.”
