Mikaela Marr earns Weekly CCAA Defensive Award after leading Broncos to back-to-back shutouts

By Anthony Gutierrez, November 4, 2025

Cal Poly Pomona women’s soccer senior defender Mikaela Marr was named CCAA Defensive Player of the Week after anchoring the Broncos’ back line in a pair of shutout victories.

The Broncos have allowed only six goals in 13 matches, portraying the team’s defensive chemistry and Marr’s heavy contribution on the back line.

“Mikaela brings a calm but commanding presence to our back line,” said head coach Jay Mason. “Her leadership and commitment set the tone for our entire defense, and it’s great to see her hard work getting recognized.”

The Broncos’ defensive toughness was on full display in the Broncos’ two 1-0 wins over Cal State Dominguez Hills and UC Merced, where Marr helped shut out the two offenses.

“It’s all about communication and trust,” Marr said. “When our back line is connected and covering for each other, it makes everything else so much smoother. We take pride in being difficult to break down.”

After dealing with injuries that sidelined her for some time last season, she’s learned to appreciate the game more and developed a more mature approach.

“Being recognized this season is such a rewarding feeling, especially after what I went through last year,” Marr said. “I had to sit out and watch from the sidelines, which was tough, but it made me even more grateful to be back healthy and competing with my team.”

Her newfound gratitude fuels her every time she walks onto the field, Marr said. She also revealed her recognition doesn’t just signify her personal success but the collective effort of her teammates.

Marr credited her back line and teammates for constantly pushing her to improve, emphasizing the daily competition in practice that makes the team stronger when it matters most.

Marr’s aggressive style of play has carried a reputation with her name. She’s known for putting her body on the line to win each and every possession.

“I think anyone on my team would agree that I’m an aggressive defender in the air,” Marr said. “I probably use my head more than my feet in the game. It gets me into some dangerous situations, so shoutout (to) my athletic trainers. They probably get a heart attack every match.”

Though toughness isn’t the only thing standing out from Marr’s game, her communication and leadership are also respected. As a veteran on the roster, her teammates embrace her  responsibility ofleading by example, which is done by showcasing consistency and a hard work ethic.

“She brings so much energy and composure to our back line,” said forward Angelina Rivas. “Her leadership keeps everyone grounded, especially in those tight games.”

Marr credits her love for soccer to her family. Her mom first signed her up as a kid, following her older brother Jared.  Over time, Marr developed her passion for soccer that has brought her to where she is now.

Looking forward, the Broncos aim to continue their strong conference play, and Marr remains locked in on keeping the back line performing well one possession at a time.

“We want to finish at the top of the table and give ourselves the best chance,” Marr said. “Last year’s championship motivates us every day. We know what it takes.”
