On Oct. 3, the CPP women’s soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to San Francisco State, dropping the Broncos’ overall season score to 4-4 and 0-2 in CCAA games.
Creating a solid defensive lineup since the start of the match, the Broncos managed to outshoot their opponent 4-3 by the end of the first half. During the second half of the game, the Broncos recovered significantly in their offensive strategies. Senior forward Taylor Scott scored a goal with the assistance of midfielder Jessica Llama and defender Elise Garcia.
Despite the loss, Head Coach Jay Mason believes the team rebounded well and was able to bring a competitive spirit to the match against SFSU.
“I think we created some good chances and built momentum in the second half after scoring,” Mason said. “We need to regroup and get refocused on the details in high pressure moments in the game.”
The SFSU Gators tied the match with a successful free kick following a foul from the Broncos. About three minutes later, the Gators received another free kick, leading to their second goal of the game.
However, senior goalkeeper Clarissa Sanchez did not let the opposing team’s edge hinder
her confidence on the field.
“I believe we are a great team that has so much potential,” Sanchez said. “Moving forward, we will be staying connected and working hard day in and day out to prepare us for the weekend and all the games to come.”
According to forward Cassie Snow, the Broncos did not execute their plays well enough and experienced other external factors which contributed to the loss against SFSU.
“We played too relaxed and did not follow our marks, resulting in us getting scored
on,” Snow said. “Also, the fields we played on this past weekend were uneven, overgrown and
difficult to play on.”
As the match concluded, SFSU was credited with two goals, ultimately triumphing over CPP’s one goal scored. Nonetheless, the Broncos are not discouraged going into future CCAA games.
“Our conference is filled with very good teams that can win on any given day which makes the CCAA so fun to play in,” Mason said.
The Broncos’ upcoming matches, including their upcoming game against CSU San Bernardino on Oct. 14, can be live streamed via the Broncos Athletic website and the CCAA Network.
