BRIC enters last tier of phased reopening this fall

By Donevan Aceves, Sept. 14, 2021

Over one year after its pilot reopening, the BRIC has not yet reopened in full capacity.
The complex is set to further reopen the rest of its facilities for staff and students this fall.

The BRIC reopening continues to follow the same tier system established last May, according to Associate Director of Campus Recreation Programs, Kaycee Martin.

“We are currently in tier three of our four tier reopening plan. Tier four is where we see ourselves moving to a mostly normal reopening in terms of what it would continue to look like moving forward,” said Martin. “In terms of lounge spaces and the full court operations, we aren’t currently there yet but I do see us getting there relatively soon.”

The BRIC will now operate under a reduced schedule, meaning that it will be open from 7 a.m.- 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m.- 8 p.m. Friday to Sunday.

The facilities of the BRIC currently available under the third reopening tier include second and third floor fitness equipment areas, badminton courts, studios, volleyball courts, locker rooms, leisure and lap pools, studios and the pro shop.

The indoor lounge area, basketball courts, and other contact sports courts remain closed.
However, the complex will continue to follow the university’s COVID-19 preventative guidelines by enforcing social distancing and mask coverings for all in the building.

To many students, like sociology student Alyssa Pedroza, the BRIC is a familiar place to recharge both mentally and physically.

“Because of everything that is happening with COVID-19 I think that people will look forward to going back on campus or look forward to going to the BRIC since it’s a place where some people go to just let loose,” said Pedroza.

In addition, ASI Campus Recreation has implemented a new cleaning tag system which informs students of the cleanliness of the fitness equipment they are using. They also plan to implement plexiglass windows between fitness stations and limit the student capacity in smaller areas of the facility, such as Bronco Peak.

Business administration student Michael Mejia hopes to explore the fitness facilities and courts for the first time this semester.

“I didn’t get to see what the BRIC was like prior to the pandemic but from what I have heard it seems like it’s a cool spot on campus,” said Mejia. “I’m definitely excited to see all the new changes.”

Martin advises students to download the ASI CPP app as it provides new barcode scanners that will help eliminate the prior use of biometric hand scanners upon entry to the BRIC.

The app also offers students and staff the feature to sign up for programs and group fitness classes currently taught at the BRIC.
