Comeback win extends streak to five games

Men’s basketball cruised past the Otters on Thursday evening in Seaside as the Broncos earned themselves an 82-48 victory.

Junior guard Dwight Ramos led by coming off the bench, scoring a team-high 18 points to go along with seven rebounds.

The Broncos got off to a hot start thanks in part to senior guard Jordan Ogundiran who wasted no time by knocking down a three-pointer.

Ogundiran continued to have the hot hand early as he scored the Broncos’ first eight points.

He managed to earn 13 points with just a little over four minutes into the game.

CPP jumped out to a 27-12 lead midway through the first half after junior guard William Christmas knocked down a jumper.

The team was active inside, scoring 20 points in the paint and shooting 47 percent from the field in the first half.

Cal Poly jogged into the locker room with a commanding 24-point lead over the Otters at halftime.

Even with the double-digit lead, the Broncos never took their foot off the gas. They came out in the second half just where they left off, being aggressive on both ends of the floor and moving the ball with efficiency.

Phoenix Shackelford dribbled past his defender and dished a nice bounce-pass to the cutting Ramos, who finished with the reverse layup to extend the Broncos’ lead 53-30.

The Otters went into a full-court press to try and apply a little pressure, but the Broncostook care of the ball and didn’t allow it to phase them.

Cal Poly moved it around the perimeter and delivered crisp passes to one another. The ball found its way to Ramos at the top of the key as he made a little hesitation move and blew by his defender for the easy right-handed layup.

Ramos went 8-10 from the field in just 23 minutes of action.

Free throws had been hurting the Broncos in previous games, but Thursday night the team took 21 free throws and shot an impressive 95.2 percent from the stripe.

With just a little under five minutes remaining in the ball game, CPP ran a little clock by moving around and passing the ball.

Junior guard Riley Schaefer put his head down, bullied his way to the basket and kissed it off the glass with his left hand for two.

Off of a missed shot from the Otters, Christmas dribbled the ball up the court, lost his defender with an impressive behind-the-back move and blew past three other Monterey Bay players as he took it all the way to the basket for the easy layup.

Christmas ended the night with 12 points and eight rebounds. The junior guard has scored in double figures in all 16 games for the Broncos this season.

The Broncos ended the game on a 15-4 run and beat the Otters by 34 points. They have now won four straight.

Ogundiran was the second leading scorer Thursday night with 17 points.

Shackelford, Nikhil Peters, and Riley Schaefer each contributed with six points.

On Saturday the Broncos defeated 22nd ranked Cal State East Bay 66-59.

Ogundrian scored 17 points in the game and gathered four rebounds.

Junior guard Schaefer scored 12 points in the game shooting 85 percent from the field. Down 41-28 in the first half, the Broncos’ defense only allowed 18 points in the second half allowing them to comeback for the victory.

Cal Poly extends its win streak to five games and now sits with an overall record of 12-5 and 10-5 in the CCAA, which has them tied for third place in conference.

The Broncos will return home to play UC San Diego on Thursday and Cal State San Marcos on Saturday.

Both games will tip off at 7:30 p.m.
