The assistant athletics director tasked with relaunching the student fan group “The Herd” is no longer with Cal Poly Pomona, university officials said last week.

Steven Esparza, who was hired in March of last year as director of public relations and donor service, left university employment Feb. 15, according to an email from athletic director Brian Swanson.

The Athletics Department declined comment on Esparza’s departure as a personnel matter.

Esparza could not be reached for comment last week.

The department on Jan. 18 hosted “Pack the Stands 2: The Refill,” at men’s and women’s basketball games, as the relaunch of “The Herd.”

First-year engineering major Nicholas Patane came forward to lead the group and work with Esparza raising campus support for athletics.

Patane could not be reached for comment.

The Herd is a fan club open to all Cal Poly Pomona students that works to promote school spirit, unity, and awareness of varsity athletics.

Founded in 2011, the club has become less active.

Prior to joining the athletic department Esparza worked for the Los Angeles Clippers as media services assistant.
