Baseball ties in series against Point Loma

By Azariah Long

The baseball team lost the first of a three-game series against Point Loma on Thursday. The final score was 8-6.

The Broncos only allowed one base hit in the first inning. By the end of the inning, there were no points scored from either team.

In the second inning, the Broncos gave up three runs and two hits.

Point Loma led the second inning with a score of 3-2.

Despite the Broncos being down, they continued to fight to stay in the game.

Senior Jason Padlo hit the ball for a triple to help the team tie the score 3-3 in the third.

By the sixth inning, the Broncos led the game 5-4 before losing the lead in the seventh inning.

The Broncos gave up three runs against the Sea Lions. The score after the seventh inning was 7-5.

In the eighth inning of the game, the Broncos gave up eight runs and seven hits and had two errors.

The Broncos had 12 hits against the Sea Lions and had eight scores.

The team struggled with offense and defense.

The team struggled with timing to hit the ball and with some of the basic aspects of their games.

“It is about going back to the finer points of the game and if we can do those things. It can minimize those mental mistakes and not give up those three unearned inning runs,” said head coach Randy Betten. “If you look at that and if we would have eliminated some of that in these multiple innings right there, and we give them ones then I am okay with that. We are talking more pleasant in a since of a way, but it is just we got to get back to the details of the games.”

Freshman Brennan McKenzie earned four at bats three hits, two runs and two RBIs.

The freshman was a key piece to keep the game close against Point Loma.

Senior Daniel Pitts had four at bats and three runs.

“We could have eliminated mental mistakes, defensively base running, we were hitting the ball, we came out with 12 hits, but we came out six runs due to our base running,” said Padlo. “Like Coach was saying, our mental mistake is giving them three runs before the game even starts. So when we are having to battle uphill before the game even starts, it’s hard to do that.”

Nic Hernandez also played a big factor, but was later injured in the game.

He recorded one run, an RBI and one at bat.

“We need to improve on timing the hitting because in all the game, I think we have out-hit every team and getting double digit hits. Once we do that, there is no way of stopping us,” stated Hernandez.

The Broncos made up for their loss by defeating Point Loma on the road with a final score of 14-12.
