Broncos continue run in NCAA tournament

The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team played in the NCAA Division II West Region Tournament,bringing home wins in all three games as it continues to make a run in the tournament.

The Broncos opened the tournament by defeating the Chico State Wildcats in an 11-1 win on Thursday.

Junior pitcher Michael Koval was recognized as an All-West Region First Team honoree. He lived up to the award by pitching seven shutout innings and striking out six batters. Koval also did not allow any runs during his time on the mound.

CPP was off to a great start in the first inning, as junior Chris Stratton and senior Caleb Romo made it on base

Freshman Nic Hernandez scored the first run of the Broncos’ 11 runs. Sophomore Cody Martin added on to the score by hitting a RBI double, putting the score at 3-0.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Broncos brought in four more runs.

By the seventh inning, all 11 runs were brought in from CPP. The Wildcats scored one run in the top of the ninth inning, leaving the final score at 11-1.

The win allowed the Broncos to continue playing on Friday, when they earned their second victory in the tournament in a 14-2 win over Cal State Monterey Bay.

Senior pitcher Max Bethell was a major asset in the victory, as he struck out 11 batters during his eight innings on the mound.

The runs started coming in during the top of the third inning when CPP brought three players home.

The Broncos kept their offensive rhythm going as they scored six more runs in the fourth inning. Senior Ryan Webberley brought home the first of the six runs.

A throwing error after a failed double play from Cal State Monterey Bay allowed senior Jared James to advance to home plate and score.

After the fourth inning and five runs later, the score was at 9-0 with CPP in the lead.

Although the fifth inning was quiet with no runs, the Broncos brought in four more of their 14 runs in the sixth inning. Senior outfielder Daniel Pitts hit a RBI single, bringing in junior infielder Jason Padlo and Stratton. A single by sophomore Jacob Bernardy brought in more runs from Pitts.

By the seventh inning, CPP had scored all 14 runs. Cal State Monterey Bay scored both of its runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, leaving the final score at 14-2.

The Broncos’ win over Cal State Monterey Bay advanced them to play in their third game of the weekend on Saturday against Cal Baptist University.

Senior pitcher Peter Bayer pitched the first six innings, striking out six batters.

Cal Baptist University scored all five runs in the second and third innings. In the fifth inning, Romo kept the Broncos in the game by hitting his ninth home run of the season. James and Stratton also brought in runs for CPP.

Sophomore pitcher Ryan Alsworth took over the mound in the seventh inning when Cal Baptist was ahead of the Broncos 5-4. Alsworth struck out four batters in his sixth win of the season.

In the bottom of the ninth inning the score remained 5-4 with Cal Baptist University in the lead. Padlo was brought home on Pitts’ single, which tied the game 5-5 and kept the Broncos alive. The game ended in the 10th inning when James scored the final run for CPP, giving the Broncos a 6-5 victory.
