Broncos baseball shows pitching dominance

The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team defeated Cal State San Bernardino 8-2 on Friday and defeated the UT Permian Basin Falcons twice on Saturday by scores of 4-2 and 4-0. To finish out the week, the Bronco faced off against UC San Diego.

The Broncos left the field Friday night with 15 hits in the game and an outstanding performance by junior pitcher Ryan Olson and senior pitcher Max Bethell.

Olson pitched through the first five innings, allowing three hits and a single unearned run. Olson’s night ended with eight strikeouts.

Bethell collected the save after pitching the last four innings. The senior left hander allowed only one hit and a single unearned run. Bethell’s appearance resulted in 11 strikeouts and only one walk. He ended the game with eight consecutive strikeouts.

The Broncos swept the Falcons in a doubleheader on Saturday. Senior pitcher Peter Bayer pitched for the first four innings earned 8 strikeouts with 16 batters faced.

Sophomore pitcher Peter Beattie entered in the top half of the fifth inning to replace Bayer. Beattie earned five strikeouts for the four innings on the field.

The Broncos offense collected 11 hits in the game. Senior infielder Caleb Romo logged three runs batted in while going 1-for-4 in the game. Junior infielder Chris Stratton went 3-for-4, scoring three runs, one in the first inning, one in the fifth and the last in the seventh inning.

Pitching for the second game of the day, junior pitcher Michael Koval allowed three hits and a single walk. Koval notched nine strikeouts, en route to his second win of the season.

The Broncos scored all the runs for the game in the first inning.

The Broncos will return to CPP on Monday to start a five-game homestand at Scolinos Field. They will face the Vanguard Lions for one game and the Azusa Pacific Cougars for one game before opening up CCAA play for three games against the San Francisco State Gators.
