The madness of Chip Kelly

By Enrique Cervantes

With the flurry of an offseason that involved the Philadelphia Eagles and their head coach, Chip Kelly, it is amazing to think that it’s not over yet.

To recap: Kelly traded away star running back LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills for linebacker Kiko Alonso to start off the offseason. He then let wide receiver Jeremy Maclin walk, traded quarterback Nick Foles away for QB Sam Bradford and signed Mark Sanchez to a new contract while bringing in cornerback Walter Thurmond III. The biggest surprise was signing away running back DeMarco Murray from the Dallas Cowboys.

And that was only a week in mid-March.

With the draft just a couple of weeks away, the wheels are still turning and everyone is pointing to one target: Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota.

Many media pundits have all speculated that Kelly is trying to grab as many former Ducks players. He already has Josh Huff, Alonso, Casey Matthews and six others. Mariota would be the Holy Grail of all former Oregon players.

In his two years as the Eagles head coach, Kelly has quickly risen to power. He went from being just the head coach to also overseeing the player personnel department. We have seen that his system from college, from the on-field stuff to the off-field stuff, has translated well.

The next few weeks will all determine whether he is a mad genius or just plain mad.

The biggest rumor is that Bradford is nothing more than a trade chip to move up in the draft and nab Mariota. With the number two pick, the Tennessee Titans have a big question mark for the QB position. The Eagles could dangle Bradford in hopes of moving all the way up in the draft so Mariota isn’t taken with the first pick.

The only support for that theory is that official Eagles team stores have not stocked their shelves with Bradford jerseys. Is that the ultimate sign that he’s not going to stay for long? Probably not, but it heats up the rumor.

Of course, Mariota is linked to almost every team that has question marks at the QB position. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns and San Diego Chargers are all teams that have recently worked out the Oregon QB. So it’s no surprise the Eagles are locked in there.

The stunning part of all of this is how calm the Eagles’ front office seems to be. The media is shooting out all of these rumors about Mariota, but Kelly has been tight-lipped. His only comment was that Bradford is not a trade chip.

His madness will all be revealed April 30 when the NFL Draft opens. It’ll be pure chaos if a huge trade goes down and Mariota reunites with Kelly.
