The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos volleyball team’s season came to an end on Saturday with a hard fought 3-1 win over the Cal State East Bay Pioneers. Before that, the Broncos took on the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters, ultimately losing that game 3-0.
Against the Otters, the Broncos fell behind early of the first set. Freshman outside hitter Madison May and freshman setter Alina Smith rallied to force a tie at 10-10. From there, the two teams fought back and forth, with neither team pulling away.
At 20-20, CSUMB that pulled away. The Broncos, not having enough punch to catch up, dropped the first set 25-21.
The second set began with the teams shooting out to a 6-6 tie. From there, the Broncos rallied to take a 11-6 lead. Like the first set, the teams exchanged points and leads, fighting a 22-2 tie. However, the Broncos failed to score again in that set, losing 25-22.
CPP shot out to a quick score to start the third set, which turned into a point exchange, with each team not giving an edge. At 11-11, the Otters began to pull away, with the Broncos falling into a 10-point deficit. Without enough to catch up, the Broncos dropped the last set 25-17.
May led the Broncos against the Otters with 15.5 points and 15 kills. Junior setter Nicoletta Stark led the team with 13 digs.
The Broncos then took on the Pioneers for the last game of the regular season.
In the first set, the Broncos took control right out of the gate, jumping a 12-5 lead to start. Only trailing once in the set, it was a strong play for the Broncos. It was an all around attack as they won the set 25-15, with 11 different players registering points.
However, the second set was a different story. Both teams never got the chance to truly pull away, exchanging ties and leads every few games. With the game tied at 25, Blaine finished the set for the Broncos. She scored the final two points, winning the set 27-25.
CPP couldn’t finish with a sweep, however, as the Pioneers fought back and won the third set. The two teams exchanged rallies late in the set. The Broncos fought back from being down 19-15. Smith scored the final three points for the Broncos before the Otters finished the set, winning 25-22.
The fourth set proved to be the final set. The Broncos came out slow out the gate, trailing 4-0. However, led by senior libero Roxanne Cardona, the Broncos struck back with seven unanswered points. From there, the Broncos never let go of the lead, finishing it with a 25-21 victory.
Blaine led the Broncos against the Pioneers, finishing with 16.5 points and 15 kills. For the season, Blaine had a total of 293 kills.
Senior middle blocker Lauren Jones led all seniors for the 2014 season.
Jones finished the season 201 kills, 32 digs and 237 points.
The Broncos finished the season with a 15-10 overall record, with 13-9 in conference play and placing in fifth place in the conference.
The team, however, remains relatively young with only four seniors on the roster. With players like Stark, Herrera, and Blaine coming back for the 2015 season, the Broncos will begin preparation for that year as soon as possible.
