Bronco sports review

By Bryan Stauffer

One Final Four appearance.

Two West Region tournament berths.

Two track and field All-Americans.

A top-10 finish at the NCAA Division II Cross-Country Championships.

Of the 10 athletic teams at Cal Poly Pomona, six fought their way into the national spotlight this academic year.

The women’s basketball team earned a trip to the Final Four in Erie, Pennsylvania before being ousted by the eventual champion, Bentley.

Both the men’s basketball team and baseball team had promising seasons and reached the postseason, but were eliminated in the first and second rounds of the West Region Tournaments.

Junior pole vaulter Justin Ellerbee and junior jumper Jessica Giacoletti earned All-American honors after placing in the top eight in pole vault and high jump at nationals.

The men’s cross-country team took eighth at nationals, marking its best finish in 16 years.

It was one of the more impressive collective efforts the CPP athletic program has put together in recent memory, but with a number of key returners and incoming athletes set to compete for the Broncos next year, this type of performance could certainly be something to get use to.
