Broncos lose three to Tritons

The baseball team wrapped up its season with a four-game series
against UC San Diego. The Broncos lost the series to the Tritons,
who were No. 5 in the nation going into the series.

Bronco baseball finishes its season with a 26-21 overall record
and 16-18 CCAA record.Cal Poly did break the Tritons three-game
winning streak with a win on Thursday, but that would be the only
game of the series in which the Broncos came out on top.

The Broncos won one and lost one at home on Thursday, 3-1, and
Friday, 19-5. They traveled to San Diego for a doubleheader on
Saturday and lost the first and second games, 7-3 and 11-9.

Freshman right-hander Kevin Bosson started the game and put up a
solid performance through 6 1/3 innings. Bosson faced 27 batters
and allowed only three hits and one run. The win brings his record
to 4-5. Junior right-hander Brad Wilson came into the game in the
seventh and received his fourth save of the season.

A home run by junior third baseman Richard McDowell in the third
put the Broncos up 1-0.The Tritons scored one run in the top of the
fourth, but the Broncos fought back putting two more on the board
in the bottom of the inning to bring the score to 3-1 where it
would stay.

Cal Poly lost Friday, but the Bronco bats hit three home runs in
the game. Senior Chris Brehm hit his sixth home run of the season,
and junior second baseman Manuel Navarro smacked one over the fence
after striking out in his first at-bat of the game.

The team did not have much luck in San Diego. The two losses
bring the Broncos’ overall away record to 10-15.

Game one of the doubleheader, the Broncos took an early lead
with a score of 3-2 at theend of the third. However, Cal Poly would
remain scoreless for the remainder of the game while the Tritons
put five more runs on the board.

The second game was a little closer, but the Tritons won the
battle in the end. The Broncos were down 5-4 at the end of the
third. UCSD scored three in the bottom of the fourth leaving some
work for the Bronco bats.

The Broncos scored five runs in the top of the sixth, getting a
boost from junior first baseman Nick Tanos’ three RBI home run. The
Broncos were up 9-8, but the Tritons put up three runs in the
bottom of the sixth to put them on top and win the game.
