The legacy of Nipsey Hussle

The legacy of Ermias Joseph Asghedom, better known as rapper Nipsey Hussle, has not been laid to rest following his death on March 31.

Hussle was a father, son, brother and longtime boyfriend to actress Lauren London.

Shot outside his store in Los Angeles, the days following his murder have only continued to shed light on the activism Hussle advocated for.

As a former gang member, Hussle devoted his time to helping others abandon such a lifestyle and promote unity within the Los Angeles community.

Eric Ronald Jr. has been charged for his death as well as the wounding of two others.

Since his death, there have been numerous vigils honoring the late rapper. Though this may be the first some may have heard of Hussle, his activism did not go unnoticed. Using his enlightenment to motivate others, people from all walks of life have been able to come together to honor his legacy.

The people at these vigils have spoken about the work that needs to be done within the populous city to follow the efforts made by Hussle.

A service was held for Hussle on April 11 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, which has not been used to host a memorial since the death of Michael Jackson. The tickets were complimentary on a first-come basis and sold out within minutes. Being in high demand, people began reselling tickets on eBay, which the site quickly banned.

The service included performances by Jhené Aiko, Stevie Wonder and others.

Before his performance, Stevie Wonder expressed the need for stricter gun laws in the United States.

Seeming to be a constant issue in America, one question remains. When will the senseless act of violence be enough to create a change?

The service also included a letter from former President Barack Obama which emphasized the hope that Hussle saw for his community.

Following the service, there was a 25-mile procession through the streets of Los Angeles that led to his final resting place at Forest Lawn.

Moving forward, I hope that others can lead by Hussle’s example to provide a voice for change. His death has shown the power of unity in a time of darkness to bring light to recurring issues within our society.

We all have the power to make our mark and there is no better time than now.
