Legal problems jeopardize 49er season

By Juana Lopez

As the San Francisco 49ers get ready for the 2014 football season, a few legal problems surround some of the team’s key players, including quarterback Colin Kaepernick, wide receiver Quinton Patton, linebacker Aldon Smith and cornerback Chris Culliver.

Kaepernick and Patton are being investigated for sexual assault after being accused of spending the night in a Miami hotel room with an unknown woman.

Smith has been dealing with a DUI, gun charges and rehab. In his latest legal controversy, he was arrested for a hoax bomb threat at the LAX airport.

Culliver recently pleaded not guilty after allegedly striking a witness with brass knuckles after a hit and run incident.

All of these legal matters can play a huge part in the team’s upcoming season, and the fact that some of the team’s best players might not come back after this season effects the team in a negative way. These issues don’t even include some of the major injuries that some other team players faced last season, which could also be a factor in the success of the team in the near future.

This upcoming season is supposed to be one of the biggest seasons for the 49ers, being that they are playing in their new stadium and also being that they have the opportunity to be the best team in the NFL.

The unnamed woman claimed to have spent the night in a room where Kaepernick and Patton were. She apparently woke up in a hospital not remembering much about the night before. A rape test was performed, but no results have been released to the public.

Kaepernick is one of the most famous football stars in the NFL, and it is not a surprise that he is an easy target for these types of accusations. He claims the report to be false and no charges have been made yet.

It is not the first time a famous athlete has been accused of sexual assault. Whether it is true or not, I believe that male athletes are some of the most targeted individuals because they are always surrounded by women, and it is something that is easily believable by the public eye.

Smith, one of the team’s most talented, young linebackers, has been dealing with legal drama since the 2013 season of the NFL. He dealt with a DUI as well as felony gun charges, but it’s his latest issue that is affecting the team. He was arrested on April 13 for making a fake bomb threat at the LAX airport.

Reports have claimed that the 49ers are not looking to extend their contract with Smith which is unfortunate because he is one of their best players so this would have a negative impact on the team. According to ESPN, the 49ers have till May 3 to decide whether to sign him on.

Culliver recently pled not guilty after being arrested on March 28 for a hit and run and posession of brass knuckles, both of which are felonies. The team was looking to extend Culliver’s contract, but after this incident, things might be different since he might face league discipline.

As a 49ers fan, I do not want to worry about all the negative things the team is dealing with. The 49ers have a Superbowl to win and that should be the only thing on the team’s mind.
