The Associated Students Inc. gathered Oct. 30 to talk over upcoming events, potential plans for a new town hall building with student resources, the appointment of a new election council and updates on campus participation.
Plans to turn the Poultry Unit into a student resource building was proposed by College of Agriculture Senator Madison Navarro. Although the building itself will take 10 years to become operational, inputting opinions and plans will be great for consideration once funding is secured, according to Navarro. The amount of funding required was not mentioned at the meeting.
“I was able to meet with departments to speak on plans to host a College of Ag town hall to allow students to have input on a vacant building formerly known as the Poultry Unit, which is near the beef unit,” Navarro said. “So the building itself requires several repairs and funding to even begin any solidified planning.”
Navarro said the proposed space would include additional storage, classrooms and laboratory space for College of Agriculture students.
College of Letters, Arts & Social Sciences Senator Ruth Rocha talked about the Student Government Cafe and the overachieving turn out. The event served a free specialty drink and featured a menu with multiple items, according to an ASI post. The event took place in the student government office building 35 room 339, Oct. 27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“Student Government Cafe was a great hit,” Rocha said. “Our goal was to serve 150 students, so we ended up serving 230 students until we officially ran out.”
Rocha credited Officer of Campus Engagement Sherwin Weerakoon; for collaborating on the event. She said students obtained food handlers certification to help prepare for serving food and drinks.
During the Oct. 23 meeting, President Alejandra Lopez Sanchez nominated Alejandra Torres as election chair for the 2026-27 school year. Vice President Kimora-Aoki Morley motioned to appoint Torres as the election chair, which was passed.
Morley said the election chair oversees the fairness and transparency of ASI elections.
“It’s an appointed role and they’re very pivotal in student government,” Morley said. “They uphold the transparency and just make sure that the election process is as fair as it can be. So, they hold a very important role.”
Morley also discussed efforts to increase student participation in campus surveys after speaking to a representative of the Office of Community and Belonging, on Oct. 23 at the board meeting.
Morley said Cal Poly Pomona students and some CPP community members received the Bronco Questionnaire Experience survey via email. Morley said the survey is a way to garner the climate on campus.
She stated during the Oct. 23 presentation from the representative, they had 7% of students participating in the survey and are striving to increase the outreach to 13% of students. Morley also said staff and faculty are usually responsive.
During the board meeting, a reminder was issued by Secretary of External Affairs Arpanjot Dosanjh that Nov. 3 is the last day for registration to vote in elections throughout California.
The next ASI Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Nov. 13 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the England Evans Room at the Bronco Student Center and on Zoom as the Nov. 3 meeting is canceled because of the annual Unity Cup. The Unity Cup is an event in which student government leaders come together to engage, network and promote awareness, according to ASI.
