Cal Poly Pomona’s University Village announced a new parking permit for residents.
UV residents normally have to buy a CPP campus parking permit to be allowed to park at UV.
PTS usually pays for the resurfacing of the UV parking lot every couple of years, according to Director of Student Housing David Laxamana, but since PTS didn’t have an official agreement with the Village/Enterprises to pay for the parking lot renovation, UV had to pay for the summer 2026 repairs, which included resurfacing the asphalt, concrete, adding a slurry seal and repainting the parking space lines.
“Since they were having financial constraints, we had to pay for it,” Laxamana said. “But we were like, ‘What could we do so we could get some revenue recovery on it?’”
Future UV residents for the fall 2026 semester received an email July 22 announcing the new permit, just a month before move in day Aug. 15.
CPP finance, real estate and law student Charles Parker Barry said he assumed the new permit was a rumor.
“I was annoyed and surprised because I already bought a parking pass, and they hadn’t mentioned anything last year,” Barry said. “The only information I could find on it was buried in two emails over the summer.”
Laxamana said the price of the new UV parking permit is still in discussion but said it will be cheaper than the campus parking permit, which costs $231, according to PTS. “I hope to have it finalized by the end of the month,” Laxamana said.
Until then, Laxamana said UV students don’t need to buy a campus parking permit to park at the village like previous semesters and will not be ticketed. Residents can pick up a gate card at the front office, Laxamana said.
According to an email from UV to residents Aug. 18, UV residents who purchased a parking pass were able to get a full refund if they contacted PTS by Aug. 19. After Aug. 19, refunds were prorated, and students can no longer receive the full amount.
“It seems super poorly planned and last minute,” Barry said. “They only gave us 24 hours to go to parking services for the refund. This seems more like a way to cover their liability than to give us a refund.” The revenue from the parking permits will go toward the cost of maintenance for the parking lot and will no longer go to PTS, Laxamana said.
“This will work out to the benefit of the residents,” Laxamana said. “Those who don’t park on campus will save on funds and those who do will at a more affordable rate.”
PTS has daily parking permits available Monday – Friday for $8 and Saturday – Sunday for $5, according to the PTS website. Daily permit dispensers can be found in J lot, M lot, F lot, B lot and parking structure 2. For more information on daily parking dispensers and their locations, students can visit the PTS website.
CPP civil engineering student Job Carando, who has lived in UV for two years, said he was shocked when he received the news.
“A lot of people bring their cars, and there’s always parking,” Carando said. “I don’t know what the benefit of this is.”
UV has been around for over 30 years and has never had its own permit. Laxamana said this new permit will be permanent going forward unless discussions with PTS change.
“We regret the inconvenience, but it’s one of those unavoidable financial realities we have to face,” Laxamana said.
The Poly Post requested additional information from Laxamana on the cost of resurfacing the parking lot and number of UV residents who park cars at UV but received no response.
