At 11:30 a.m. Feb. 20, Association Students, Inc. (ASI) Campus Recreation held Rec Fest in the University Quad to promote the Bronco Recreation and Intramural Complex (BRIC).
The event included activities like kickboxing, games of Connect Four, information booths for all classes and activities offered at the BRIC, free food and an opportunity for students to build their own stuffed bronco.
The BRIC offers many fitness and wellness workshop opportunities for all students that are interested in training. Rec Fest promoted the BRIC’s free, 25-minute Try-A-Trainer session to be held from noon to 2 p.m. on March 10 and April 14 for individual fitness needs. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and is located in the BRIC lobby.
The BRIC will also be hosting a weekly drawing throughout the rest of the spring semester from 4 to 6 p.m. on the third floor of the BRIC, Mondays through Thursdays.
Cesar Cruz, a third-year English education student and a group fitness instructor, teaches the Olympic weightlifting class. All equipment is included for the class and no previous experience is required. Alongside weightlifting, a variety of fitness classes are offered and open for students to participate in.
By joining 24 or more fitness classes from February 3 to May 6, members are eligible to be entered in a giveaway at the end of the semester. Giveaways will be distributed at the Spring Fitness Finale from 6-7 p.m. May 7.
“The BRIC is a good place to explore new fitness activities because there is a wide variety of options to do,” Cruz said. “People can see what they’d like to do and be motivated to come back.”
The Bronco Events and Activity Team (BEAT) participated alongside Rec Fest to help bring snacks and Build-A-Bronco to life throughout U-hour. Build-A-Bronco is the chance for students to build their own bronco by stuffing it and putting a heart inside while creating a birth certificate.
“It was so much fun, they should do it more often,” said Valeria Villasenor, a fifth-year business student. “It was so cute, I loved it.”
Monica Martinez, a second-year communication student and activity assistant for BEAT, shared her involvement in helping make events happen throughout campus. Giving out snacks and information about Rec Fest helped encourage students to be more involved in campus events at the BRIC.
“This has been my favorite job so far. It’s been a great experience by learning how everything goes in event planning,” Martinez said. “By placing events in a wide variety, it’s been fun and I encourage all to apply (to BEAT) if they want to be involved.”
The DJ played music throughout the event, and Round Table had a choice of chicken, turkey or vegetable sandwiches free for students to pick up on the go. There was a booth where students could spin the wheel to earn a free ASI shirt, bag or cup. As well, free Rec Fest shirts were distributed to all who participated at the event.
The BRIC is open for all Cal Poly Pomona students to explore new fitness routines, sports and community from 6 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Fridays and 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
