Registered sex offender arrested on campus for alleged sexual battery

On Aug. 28, 46-year-old male suspect Phillip Calderon was arrested in Parking Lot A at Cal Poly Pomona for alleged sexual battery, sodomy and violating parole.

Calderon resides in the city of Covina, which is about six miles from campus. Calderon is currently a registered sex offender.

According to meganslaw.ca.gov, Calderon has several previous offenses, including “lewd or lascivious acts with a child 14 or 15 years of age and offender 10 or more years older than victim,” and “(went) to arranged meeting with (a) minor with intent to commit a specified sex offense.”

Calderon first met the victim through the dating app Grindr.

Parking Lot A was the location where they agreed to meet for the first time.

This was not Calderon’s first visit to CPP.

Calderon previously took classes through the Open University (OU) program. According to cpp.edu, OU allows individuals who are not admitted to CPP to take undergraduate level courses.

Local hospital staff made the University Police Department (UPD) aware of the incident.

According to Lt. Marc Simpson, the UPD worked closely with “Glendora Police Department and California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (parole).”

“Calderon was arrested on Aug. 29, 2019 (by the UPD) at 9:10 p.m. The suspect was located as he left a business in Glendora and arrested without incident,” Simpson said.

Calderon was processed at the Los Angeles County jail.

According to Simpson, “The Los Angeles County District Attorney chose not to file charges against the suspect, but the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation violated Calderon’s parole and he will remain in custody for undetermined amount of time.”

The District Attorney did not file charges, as the office was “unable to prove beyond a reasonable doubt,” according to UPD Chief Dario Robinson.

Currently, Calderon has a risk assessment score of six, which meganslaw.ca.gov defines as above average to commit another sexual offense.

On Oct. 2, another sexual assault incident occurred in the residential halls.

The victim was labeled as “incapable of consent” and the crime was reported on Oct. 4 at 8:31 a.m.

There is currently no further reported information regarding the case due to victim privacy.

The Student Health Services is here to help students find all the resources needed in an assault situation.

The health center is open weekdays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
