Save lives, donate blood today

By Heather Ludegna

Start off the New Year by saving a life by donating blood at the annual drive.

The drive is coming back to campus and is being held in the BSC, Ursa Minor suite from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. starting today and ending Thursday.

The wellness center and the American Red Cross are teaming up again to make the donation center easily accessible to the staff and students and will also be serving complimentary snacks with beverages.

Many might think that one person does not make a difference but according to the American Red Cross, one person’s donation of blood can save up to three lives.

The Red Cross receives an emergency approximately every eight minutes and is needed to go help those in need of a blood transfusion.

The Red Cross sets a goal and a plan for their visits to Cal Poly Pomona and has also hosted competitions against Mount San Antonio College (Mt. Sac) to see which campus’ students, staff and faculty donates more blood.

The faculty and staff of Mt. Sac won the last competition by donating one more pint of blood than our Broncos.

The blood drive is also convenient in the sense of time.

Many students and faculty have a chaotic schedule but the blood drive has opened up their schedule to be almost an all day event so everyone can have the chance to donate.

The donation takes 10 minutes and the donor must be at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good overall health.

Red Cross will run through the process by providing each donor with an informational guide followed by the donors filling out paperwork that states specific information about their blood type.

The final step before the donation will be to take a mini physical.

Anyone who is interested can make the process a little faster by applying online to make an appointment or you can do a simple walk-in.

The Red Cross advises all donors to drink plenty of fluids the day before donating to prevent risks of bruising, dizziness, etc.
