Cal Poly Pomona along with the city of Pomona has made a bid for Amazon to locate their second headquarters within Campus South.
Amazon specified that it is looking for a 100-acre site to begin developing its second North American headquarters.
“By joining forces with Fairplex, the city of Pomona and the county of Los Angeles, we are proposing the opportunity to tap into the limitless potential of this region,” CPP President Soraya M. Coley said during the announcement at Innovation Village.
Amazon plans to create their second headquarters to somewhat match their original headquarters in Seattle.
Like the Seattle headquarters, which employs about 40,000 people, the new headquarters is planning to employ around 50,000 workers.
Amazon, which earned $135 billion in revenue in 2016, plans to invest $5 billion into the new headquarters.
The President and CEO of the Fairplex Miguel A. Santana stated that although both CPP and the Fairplex could have submitted separate proposals, working together would have the best benefit for the community.
Both sites are offering up space to the company.
The location, according to Amazon, has to be near major highways and international airports
“We check off all the boxes,” Santana said.
The bid specifically focuses on the availability of educated workers that would be coming out of CPP.
With the plans to develop Campus South still in the initial phases, CPP offered up the 100 acres asked for by Amazon, which reduces the remaining acreage of Campus South to 200.
In addition to creating jobs, a report from the city also believes that property tax revenue collected from the Fortune 500 companies will be available to construct city repairs.
Specifically these funds would go towards infrastructure repair, a vital part of Amazon’s service.
“Our community has unified in support of the Amazon PolyPlex proposal in an unprecedented way,” LA County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis said.
According to the fact sheet about their Seattle headquarters, the average annual salary for Amazon employees is roughly $100,000.
Amazon also announced that since their second location will be a full-fledged headquarters, they would be hiring for all positions, including executive positions.
Solis also stated that LA County officials would likely become involved to speed up the process.
LA County may even go as far as having a team on standby to assist Amazon at any time.
The deadline for cities to make their proposal was Oct. 19.
Amazon is expected to make an announcement sometime in 2018 about where their new headquarters will be located.
According to recent reports, Amazon currently employs over 300,000 employees.
Although no word on the application process for Amazon’s second headquarters, people interested can still submit their application online for current job openings.
