Cal Poly Pomona’s Career Center hosted the Part- Time Jobs Fair for Broncos on Thursday at the Cultural Lawn.
The event, held from noon to 3 p.m. was attended by both on-campus employers, such as Associated Students, Inc. and Panda Express, and off-campus companies including Costco and Verizon Wireless. Employers were not only looking for students that wanted part-time jobs or internships, but also students that may want to move up in a company that would fit with their major and career aspirations. Booths provided the students with company information and basic qualifications and requirements of positions.
Lauren Corona, the event coordinator at the Career Center, has been planning this event for the past four years. She said that it has been a helpful source for students to find part-time jobs near the university.
“We enjoy contracting local employers because of ease,” said Corona.
Matt Schwengler, a third-year civil engineering student, brought his resume along with him ” just in case there was an opportunity for him to provide the companies with that information.
“I [would] rather have face to face interaction in- stead of just applying on- line where you don’t get to give first impressions,” said Schwengler.
Ja Taun Moore, administrative coordinator for Orientation Services, said that her department has a new team of student leaders for freshmen and transfer orientations every summer. Orientation Services looks
for a diverse group of students that are upbeat and have school spirit ” ideal representatives for the university.
“I am glad our university provides these job fairs for our students to help them in this competitive job market,” said Moore.
Verizon Wireless’s Supervisor for Talent Acquisition Lisa Blake and recruiter Betzy Gomez told students about how many students start off in retail, but also have the possibility to move up the ranks in positions while working on a degree and after graduation.
The companies and organizations also commented on how good it is for students to attend these job fairs, as they get face to face experience with quick interviews and connections.
The Career Center will also be hosting their Fall Career Fair on Oct. 16, and the Engineering/Hi-Tech Career Fair on Oct. 17
