Cal Poly’s men’s tennis team opened its season with a big 9-0
shutout win over Montana State University-Billings on Friday and
suffered a difficult 8-1 loss to Brigham Young University-Hawaii on
Saturday. The broncos then lost a heart-breaking 5-4 loss against
No. 25 Midwestern State Sunday.

In this President’s Day Duels competition held in Glendale,
Arizona, the Broncos increased their overall season record to
1-3.

Opening their season with a well-earned shutout victory, the
Broncos fought hard to ensure their season began with a strong
effort.

Robby Dabbs was Cal Poly’s only singles winner against
Midwestern State, defeating Zatutovic 0-6, 6-4, 10-7.

The Broncos enjoyed much more success in doubles, sweeping
Midwestern State 3-0.

Romero/Singer won 8-4, Lau/Boggero won 8-4 and Dabbs/McNulty won
8-2.

Many Broncos defeated the Montana State Yellowjackets in
straight sets Friday, including Broncos senior James Lee with 6-2,
6-0, senior Josh Lau with 6-1, 6-2, junior Keith Boggero with 6-1,
6-2 and junior Shane McNulty with 7-5, 6-2.

In doubles, the Broncos team of freshmen Kevin Singer and junior
Salvador Romero defeated their opponents 8-1, Boggero and Lau won
8-4 and junior Robby Dabbs and McNulty also won 8-4.

While Saturday’s matches against the highly competitive and
nationally ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii Seasiders ended in defeat,
Romero managed to stop the Seasiders from completely shutting out
the Broncos.

Going into a exhausting third set, Romero managed secure one
Bronco victory against Seasiders junior Agnel Peter 2-6, 6-4,
14-12.

The singles matches of Singer and McNulty came close to victory,
earning final match scores of 6-4, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-3
respectively.

The doubles pair of Boggero and Lau also fell to the Seasiders
8-3, as did the team of Dabbs/McNulty and Romero/Singer who
finished with a final match score of 8-4 and 8-3 respectively.

The men’s tennis team will play its home opener against the
University of Redlands Bulldogs this Saturday.
