Kick into gear outdoors

By Cielestia Calbay

Sometimes a day at the gym may not cut it when it’s packed
with hordes of people, or the stuffy atmosphere becomes smothering.
A little fresh air never killed anybody, so why not work up a sweat
with good ol’ Mother Nature? With warmer weather and bluer skies, a
day in the outdoors may just be what the doctor ordered.

Nature Trails

Whether you’re an avid hiker, runner, cyclist or brisk walker,
there is an assortment of trails to be found near campus.

Just down the street, Walnut offers 26 miles of equestrian and
hiking trails that wind through the city’s rolling hills.

Those looking for more of a challenge can turn to Potato
Mountain near the Claremont Colleges. This spud offers clear-day
vistas of the San Gabriel Valley as well as a creek that bubbles
through an oak woodland.

For bikers, head down to Orange for Peter’s Canyon, which
features a nice, relaxing ride around the lake.

Rock Climbing

If you don’t mind a little dirt, then outdoor rock climbing may
just be your ticket.

An assortment of outdoor locations can be found in the Riverside
and San Bernardino counties.

Black Mountain near Idyllwild is perfect for adrenaline junkies,
as climbers can reach up to 2,700 feet in elevation. The climb pays
off well from the fire lookout that offers a 360 degree view of the
world below.

But if you’re a little faint of heart, indoor rock climbing is a
good start.

Hangar 18 in Upland keeps novices in mind, as it offers intro
packages starting at $30.

Surfing

With the weather heating up, it’s time to hit the beach and Hang
Ten.

Whether you’ve been riding the waves since you were 12, or just
dream about surfing the pipelines, there is a number of local
beaches that offers lessons on how to ride that gnarley wave.

You may not be the next Kelly Slater by the end of the day, but
La Vida Laguna in Laguna Beach can get you close.

The site offers both one-on-one and group instruction from
experts, a wetsuit and a soft foam board – perfect for
beginners.
