ASI holds info session for upcoming elections

By Kim Pluth

Students were given election packets and the opportunity to ask
questions about the 2009-10 election process at the Associated
Students Inc. info session March 4.”The info session was [ASI’s]
desire for the students to know the commitment, dedication, and
passion that it takes to become an elected ASI student leader,”
said ASI Vice President Mercy Daramola. There is more focus on the
importance of selecting the future student leaders of campus
because of the budget and economic turmoil in the CSU system,
California and the country.”The recent budget cuts will most likely
be a big issue in the upcoming elections because it will affect us
directly, and the people chosen to represent the campus will be in
a position to make decisions on how we will deal with the crisis,”
said ASI Elections Committee Chair Ahmad Faqih in an e-mail.Even
though the members of ASI know students will be faced with the
challenge of choosing a new president and vice president whom they
think will make the right decisions, ASI is excited about this
year’s elections.”We are working on a campaign called ‘Your
Direction. Your Decision’ to get the campus excited and involved in
the elections,” said Faqih.ASI also created a Web page in an effort
to get students involved in the upcoming election. The site carries
the message, “From propositions and presidential elections to rec
center referendums, history shows, one vote can make a
difference.”The site is divided into sections titled Upcoming
Votes, Your Direction, Your Decision, Your Vote and Help Fight
Apathy. An excerpt from the Your Direction section reads, “College
is a time when individuals have the opportunity to experience the
ins and outs of how things happen in the real world. Participation
and concern in more issues than just passing your classes and
getting your degree has lifelong benefits.”Anyone can run for an
ASI position as long as they are a student at Cal Poly, have
completed 36 units, possess good academic standing and meet all the
requirements outlined in the election packet. Election packets are
available in the Office of Student Life for students considering
running for office. The packet includes the application, election
code, available positions and upcoming deadlines.Reach Kim
