The women’s tennis team opened its season last weekend competing
in the Cal State L.A. tournament.
On Saturday, the Broncos had six singles players competing in
the quarterfinals of the event and all six lost to tough
competition. Two doubles teams advanced to the semifinals, which
will be played on Sunday.
Junior Jenny Tsai, the Broncos’ No. 1 singles player, lost to
Kelly Hasewaga of Occidental, 6-4, 6-3 in a quarterfinal contest in
the 1-2 singles flight. Senior Renee Paquillo, the Broncos’ No. 2
player, lost to Bliss Nixon of Loyola Marymount, 6-3, 6-4.
Freshman Mallory Brady lost in the 3-4 singles bracket to Audrey
Bulkey of Loyola Marymount, 6-0, 6-0.
In the 5-6 singles flight, freshman Kara Fisher lost to Ashley
Macias of Cal State Northridge, 6-1, 6-1; sophomore Whitney Shryock
lost to Alayna Santos of Occidental, 6-2, 6-3 and sophomore Kelley
Wong lost to Bojana Ducanovic of Cal State L.A., 6-2, 6-1.
Cal Poly also had four doubles teams in action as senior Erica
Lin and Wong defeated Lunardi and Tejada of Loyola Marymount, 8-5,
to advance to the semifinals in Flight 3, while Brady and Fisher
advanced to the semifinals of the same flight with a default
victory.
Tsai and Paquillo lost in Flight 1 to de Villers and Nixon of
Loyola Marymount, 8-2 and freshman Anika You and Shryock lost to
Flores and Matijasevic of Cal State Northridge, 8-4, in Flight
2.
On Friday, the team got the 2007 season off to a good start as
all six singles players and all four doubles teams were all
victorious in the first round of play.
Tsai and Paquillo won their opening matches in the 1-2 Singles
Flight.
Tsai beat Grand Canyon’s Kimberly Lewland, 6-1, 6-1, while
Paquillo beat Grand Canyon’s Brittany Unruh, 6-2, 6-1.
Brady defeated Grand Canyon’s Camilla Tsosie, 6-1, 6-0 and
Nickie Troung of the Masters College, 6-2, 6-3 in the 3-4 Flight.
In the same flight, You defeated Katie Schaller of Biola, 6-0, 6-0
and then fell to Matijasevic, 6-2, 6-1. Lin beat Kumnodnab of Grand
Canyon, 6-1, 6-1 and then lost to Rebecca Pineda of Cal State L.A.,
6-3, 7-5.
Fisher defeated Cal State L.A.’s Princess Manasseh, 6-4, 4-6,
7-6 in the 5-6 Flight to advance to the quarterfinals, while
Shryock beat Phan Ho of Cal State L.A., 6-1, 6-2 and Alyssa Fenton
of the Masters College, 6-0, 6-0 to advance.
Freshman Alissa Benevedez beat Shawnelle Russell of Loyola
Marymount, 6-2, 6-3 and then fell to Cal Poly teammate Wong, 6-3,
6-1. Senior Patricia Robles lost to Ducanovic, 6-1, 6-1.
Tsai and Paquillo beat Kraft and Leake from the Masters College,
8-3, to advance in Flight 1; Shryock and You beat Kumnodnab and
Tsosie, 8-2, to advance in Flight 2; Lin and Wong beat Slakoff and
Vassallo of Grand Canyon, 8-2, to advance in Flight 3 and Brady and
Fisher beat Ho and Luruye of Cal State L.A., 8-2, to advance in
Flight 3.
The women’s tennis team will return to action on Wednesday
against UC Riverside in Riverside.
