Cal Poly Universities’ 59th consecutive float entry, entitled
“Arctic Antics,” rode down Colorado Boulevard on Jan. 1 during the
118th Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena.
The entry featured a group of merry polar bears and penguins
enjoying a luau-themed party. The float depicted a polar bear
skidding down on ice while being pulled back by three penguins.
Also featured on the float were a group of penguins enjoying a game
of limbo and a polar bear hula dancing in a coconut bra and grass
skirt while three penguins accompanied her with music.
Each year, the project takes Cal Poly Pomona and San Luis Obispo
nearly a year to plan, construct and decorate. The construction of
the float is split between the two campuses until about November of
each year, when the two halves are joined in Pomona. After joining,
both campuses continue the project in Pomona until late December,
when the float is moved to Pasadena for decoration.
