Cosplay brings fandoms together

By Zara Hurtado

Potterheads and Whovians are invited to set their fandom wars aside during Geek Week, Student Activities and Programs’ week-long event of programming that caters to the inner pop culture nerd in everyone.

Homage to fandoms across comic books, video games, TV screens and the big screen, Geek Week has unique events planned every day leading up to Finale Friday on Jan. 26.

Thursday, Jan. 25, the main attraction is a Cosplay Competition, held at the BSC, Games Room Etc.

“Our cosplay competition is all inclusive to all themes out there, whether it be Disney’s ‘Moana’ to Halo’s ‘Master Chief’, we welcome all,” Student Activities Assistant Elijah Flores said.

Students will be judged on three criteria: the resemblance to the character they are portraying, a Q&A performed as the character and the attention to detail put into the costume.

Participating students are eligible to enter an opportunity drawing to win the grand prize of a Nintendo Switch.

YouTube favorite Jessica Vill will also attend the night and host a live beauty demo. Vill, who boasts 288,000 followers on Instagram, is known for her detailed cosplay get ups. Iconic looks from Vill include Wednesday Addams, Jessica Rabbit and Betty Boop.

Thursday’s competition is a collaboration with CPP’s Neo-Anime club who host quarterly cosplay competitions of its own.

Second-year chemical engineering student, Caliban McNair, intends to visit every event.

“It’s going to be interesting to see a bunch of people nerd out,” McNair said. “It will be cool to see people who like comic books come together with people who like books more. It’s a good way to socialize and have fun.”

Working with clubs on campus such as the Neo-Anime club was important for Flores as he wanted Geek Week to cater to fans of all genres.

“When we first started marketing, I remember a student coming up to us and being really excited because they loved cosplay,” Flores said. “They loved making the outfits and putting on the makeup, so they felt really included with our event.”

Geek Week will kick off with Mystery Monday: Escape Rooms at the Bronco Student Center, Ursa Minor. Next up is Trivia Tuesday held at the BSC, Games Room Etc.

Wednesday is double stacked, starting with Geek N’ Greet Networking, an opportunity for students interested in the fields of gaming and entertainment to meet with industry professionals. Following the networking event is an artist alley, also held at the BSC, Ursa Major.

Harry Potter fans will get to live out their fantasy of playing seeker for Gryffindor at Thursday’s game of Quidditch, held during U-Hour at the Bronco Commons.

SAP will wrap up their event on Jan. 26 at Finale Friday with a “Back To The Future” trilogy marathon, esports tournament and plenty of board games and role-playing games to last the night.

Students who participated in events throughout the week using the hashtag #GeekOutWithASI are eligible to enter an opportunity drawing in the hopes of winning a Nintendo Switch. The winning students will be announced during Finale Friday.
