Culottes: revival of the past

By Michael Torres

Unlike men’s fashion, women’s fashion has always consisted of a wide range of styles because of its constant evolution.

From adopting new color trends to pushing contemporary elements of design, women’s apparel evokes creativity.

A recent growing trend in women’s fashion is culottes.

Caroline Benitez, my friend, first introduced me to culottes, and if you are like me, you probably aren’t familiar with this term.

Culottes are garments that are similar to skirts, but they are actually short pants. Like skirts, culottes hang and flow loosely, but they are indeed a version of pants.

According to an article in The Huffington Post, culottes first became popular in the 1500s during the reign of King Henry III of France, and they became convenient for women to wear during the Victorian Era.

The garment was reintroduced in many spring 2015 runway collections. Designers like Tibi, Jil Sander and Hermes showcased a wide array of culottes.

Celebrities are also taking part in promoting this growing style.

On July 11, Actress Keke Palmer attended Comic-Con International to be part of the “Scream Queens” panel. At the event, Palmer was photographed wearing purple culottes with a black crop top.

Other celebrities who have been spotted wearing this style of garment include: Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez.

Although I have never worn a pair of culottes, there are a few judgments that I hold about this popular trend.

For one, culottes are not for everyone. After researching them, I came to the conclusion that culottes might not be for certain body types.

Like other clothing, culottes appear to be more elegant and stylish on people who are slender; however, that doesn’t necessarily mean they are only for thin women.

When wearing culottes, consider wearing a monochromatic outfit and wearing heels to extend the length of your legs.

If you’re interested in wearing multiple layers, consider wearing a dress over this garment.

Like most outfits, with the right accessories and tops, culottes can be a great addition to your wardrobe.
