Pinto brings eclectic mix to Afternoon Blend

By Kara Vaporean

Straight from the Philadelphia music scene, Mike Pinto is
bringing his unique rhythms to the Afternoon Blend today in the
Bronco Student Center at noon.

Pinto’s music is inspiring and his lyrics relate to society and
everyday life.

A fan of Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan, Pinto is able to tell and
express his stories of the surrounding world.

“I try to listen to the greats,” said Pinto. “I like songwriters
and authors that have an influence on others.”

Pinto also enjoys reading novels to help open his mind to new
ideas.

“I am actually reading a Charles Dickens book right now,” he
said.

Getting his first guitar at 16-years-old, Pinto has made a
lasting impression on people over the past 11 years.

Growing up, he liked going to the Warped Tour in New Jersey and
Philadelphia and listening to ska bands like the Horns and punk
bands like Blink 182.

Though he was into ska, it was not until he heard Sublime that
his musical inspirations changed.

Pinto’s song writing combines reggae, ska, surf and even Latin
rhythms. His distinct vocals and flawless storytelling has brought
him success throughout the states and streaming into international
airwaves.

In 2006 he toured the underground music scene throughout the
East Coast, allowing him to expand his solo career.

Playing at clubs, colleges, festivals and radio stations
broadened his sound to new audiences.

Pinto’s next move was to travel west playing solo acoustic shows
in Japan, Guam, Hawaii and 20 United States cities.

“It was a really fun experience,” he said.

After two tours, Pinto moved to San Diego thriving to get his
music heard in Southern California.

He formed a band with drummer Todd Elrod and bassist Matt Brein
while discovering his work as a singer and guitarist. Moving west
gave him aspirations to write his self-titled second album.

The album was released in November 2007 and is featured on
iTunes.

“His sound is different from what we’ve had in the past,” said
Akiko Moritake, a music industry student and B.E.A.T committee
member.
