As finals week looms closer, students had the chance take a breather, destress and enjoy the sunny outdoor weather at ASI BEAT’s “Unwind with ASI” event hosted on May 10 at the Bronco Commons.

Music and bubbles filled the air as students eagerly waited to check-in to the event and receive a complementary ASI checkered picnic blanket.

“What we like to do is have an event before finals to help students relax,” said Lori Clark, ASI BEAT’s clerical supervisor. “We have free food, free drinks and free blankets. We’re also raffling off a Switch Lite, a $25 gift card for Amazon and Qdoba.”

Options for food included a variety of sandwiches and milk teas. Attendees enjoyed classic backyard games, such as connect four, and got to sit on down on the grass and listen to upbeat pop music.

“I just saw this event on Instagram and thought, ‘why not?’” said Emily Tran, a mechanical engineering student. This is also my first event of the entire year mainly because I wasn’t able to attend previous events hosted. I think it’s really nice that they offered us food and I even brought my own blanket, but it was nice that they provided one.”

Apart from the picnic and outdoor activities, student vendors were present. Shops such as Flipped Dimension, a student owned business that sells Cal Poly Pomona inspired merch, Clay by Crystal, a clay earring and beaded accessories shop and a clay earring and clay miniature plant shop owned by current art student, Sarah Hoffman.

“We wanted to have an event earlier called ‘Billy’s stop and shop’ which unfortunately got canceled due to the first three weeks of being online but merged it with this event and have this vendor here,” said Rudy Varo, student activity supervisor for ASI BEAT. “It’s great having them here and supporting students with small businesses. We sent out two or three call outs on our ASI website and Instagram; that’s where they reached out to us regarding information and we also had contact with some of them as we are students, we know some popular student vendors.”

This event marks the last ASI event of the semester. For future events, students can visit the ASI website.
