Trivia And Tribulations at Innovation Brew Works

By Megan Freeman and Jessica Cuevas, Apr. 12, 2022

With ice-cold beers in one hand and pens in the other, patrons of Cal Poly Pomona’s Innovation Brew Works were ready for the trivia nights held every Thursday at 6 p.m. The trivia night is full of pop culture references including ones from sitcoms like “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation.”

Despite the event starting late, it kicked off with questions about “The Office” as its first round. Each trivia question was worth one to five points, with the difficulty of the question increasing with the amount of earnable points.

Bianca Medina, a hospitality management student, shared her experience attending trivia night for the first time.

“It was a lot of fun!” said Medina. “Winning the gift card was a great reward. The only thing about trivia night is it was kind of difficult to hear, other than that it was a lot of fun. Also, it was a great way to meet new people and mingle.”

Medina was convinced by her friends to check out the brewery and their events.

Innovation Brew Works holds various events and is a place for CPP students and others to relax, drink and eat. Cal State L.A. student Cecilia Pena shared that she heard about the event and attended with a friend. Despite a compromised sound system, she was able to enjoy the refreshments at the event.

“I thought it would be a good way to meet people and be social. The food and beer is good, but the sound system sucks,” said Pena.

At the start of trivia night, instructions were unclear about where the event was being held. Even though attendees had to retrieve their own materials to participate, they remained engaged and on the edge of their seats to try and get the right answer.

When the pandemic started, Brew Works halted its weekly trivia night, but Jennifer Edwards, a mechanical engineering student and the host of trivia night, wanted to “bring people and the energy back.”

“I personally like how much I also learn along the way, like I love looking up the facts that I find and doing Wikipedia dives and looking through forums of people into these topics,” said Edwards.

Brew Works offers a variety of delicious options such as wings, pizza, salads and even desserts. They recently introduced their new St. Patrick’s Day beer in early March that sports a unique green glittery look.
