CPP’s Photo Lab captures real-life studio experience

By Gustavo Castillo & Minuet Bando, Nov. 16, 2021

Lights, camera, action! All current Cal Poly Pomona students have access to the new Photo Lab installment located in classroom 1228A, to capture their creativity through the lens of personal projects.

Whether students want to upgrade their selfie game to the next level or want to advertise their products, the Photo Lab is allowing students to book an appointment Wednesdays from noon to 4 p.m. and Fridays 1-5 p.m.

“Personally, I have used (the Photo Lab) a few times. When I was taking Professor Rico’s photography class, I got good grades, so it was a plus. It’s there for us to use and to improve their creations, so take advantage of it,” said Photo Lab employee and visual communication design student, Heajung Yu.

The medium sized room is available for hourlong sessions with a max occupancy of three students per booking.

Although no equipment can leave the room, there are two closets full of supplies available to each session ranging from camera tripods, light reflectors, light dimmers, box lights, back drops, gel holders and more.

All standard university COVID-19 protocols are to be followed in the Photo Lab.

Jasmine Guevara, Photo Lab employee and visual communication design student stated that the Photo Lab is a great hands-on experience aligning with CPP’s learn by doing motto.

College of Business Administration and College of Environmental Design students utilize this space to grasp general photography knowledge and put equipment to work in this learning environment. This free opportunity requires a virtual sign up through the website prior to entry.

“Well for VCD students, it is a requirement for them to take a photography class at CPP even though they maybe have previously (taken a class at a) community college or where they transferred from, so you know sooner or later you’re going to be exploring the Photo Lab,” said Yu.

When the session comes to an end, students are prompted to follow the Studio Clean Up instructions posted on the back of the lab door with photo step by step instructions. Once a student worker accounts for all the items placed in their original location, all equipment is sanitized for the next booking.

For students planning on visiting the Photo Lab, it is encouraged that they come with prior knowledge on how to use the equipment for there will be no assistant. Book an appointment and visit building 13, room 1228A.
