Students share new hobbies discovered during quarantine

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, many people are still staying home for their safety and the safety of others, which has allowed for plenty of time to explore new crafts and hobbies. Here are what some Cal Poly Pomona students have been up to at home while socially distancing.

“As a fitness enthusiast, it was super hard going into quarantine because the gyms all closed down. I had to do something about that, so I started training my little cousins. I did not know that I would like to be a trainer. But after training for a week, I built up some clients. I started training my cousins’ friends, and this became a cool side thing for me that I didn’t even expect. Now, I love training kids, and I am in the process of getting my personal trainer certificate.”

“Some new hobbies I’ve discovered during quarantine are cooking, tool restoration and graffiti tagging. I enjoy these new hobbies because cooking allows me to learn an important life skill while exploring the cuisines of different cultures. Tool restoration is a great way to repurpose useful items that have a vintage vibe to them. And graffiti tagging is a great way to express yourself artistically.”

“I discovered a lot of new hobbies involving the arts. I’ve always been very creative, so I decided to expand on that by drawing and painting more. I even started to sew more of my own clothes which is something I’ve always wanted to do. I also learned how to do different hairstyles and my own nails, so I don’t have to pay and get it done anymore.”

“During my time in isolation, the new hobby I picked up is cornhole. It’s fun, relaxing and easy to play by myself. I put a lot of time into practicing and getting better at the game. When I’m not playing solo, I play with my girlfriend against my parents.”

“I’ve spent most of my time doing yard work, which is good since it gets me out of the house and keeps me active. I’ve also recently gotten into baking. Although not everything has turned out great, it’s been a lot of fun trying new recipes — my favorite being lemon squares. It’s also nice because I get to share things with my family and see which ones they like.”
