Junk in the Trunk brings antiques to Pomona Fairplex

On Feb. 22-23, Pomona Fairplex hosted the Junk in the Trunk swap meet event in Expo Hall 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For an admission price of $8, shoppers could enter the Expo Hall 4 and shop a sales floor that brings the Antiques Roadshow to mind. The dominant theme of the event was home décor, so the majority of the items sold were decorative items such as furniture, wind chimes, vases, paintings, photos, plants and window frames. Clothing, jewelry and soap were also sold.

“Inspire creativity to embrace a vintage lifestyle,” read the tagline of the event, which could be found on the backside of the entry banner.

Junk in the Trunk’s definition of “vintage” is being 20 years or older.

Because the event was centered around vintage items with a home décor theme in mind, there were no pop cultural items found on the event floor.

The first booth from the entrance sold items themed and branded around the event. Janelle Snarey, the employee working at the booth, described the vintage lifestyle mentioned in the event’s tagline as “a lifestyle where you … use vintage goods to decorate home, wear and live your life.”

The event was an opportunity for vendors to sell off their antique wares, regardless of whether they have a store of their own to do so. For items to be considered vintage and therefore acceptable to sell at the event, they must be at least 20 years old, according to Rusty Saturday booth owner Angie Husted.

Some storeowners who sold at the event gave their booths different names than their brick and mortar stores. Vintage Warehouse OC was one such example, as the source store is named Old Things and Blings.

“I’ve been selling at vintage markets, and this is one of the best,” said Vintage Warehouse OC employee Cheryle Lamas. She also said crowded events and locations are very good for business.

Refreshments were available for attendees and vendors inside and outside the Expo Hall 4. The hall’s usual food and drink stands were open inside and there was a hamburger stand, a pretzel stand and a beer stand outside.

As attendees walked the Expo Hall floor and shopped, Arizona musician Michael Land (not to be confused with video game composer Michael Z. Land) played on a small stage near the left-side exits in the middle of the hall.

Rainy weather caused no disruption to the event due to it taking place indoors.
