Off campus study locations near you

As the new school year begins, new and returning students alike are thrust into a new academic environment that requires one activity: studying.

Some students enjoy studying in the myriad of locations available on campus, but others enjoy a less stressful environment. Some students like fourth-year psychology student Xavier Lemus, who normally studies on campus, are open to new studying spots.

The areas around Cal Poly Pomona mostly consist of residential neighborhoods, industrial parks and other private properties. There are also a few parks and cafés near campus that are available for studying.

A park available to study in, not far from CPP, is Snow Creek Park in Walnut. Snow Creek Park is a medium-sized park with plenty of spots to sit and study.

There are a few tables available around the park’s baseball field and many trees to sit under along the creek and horseback riding trail. Cesar Tenorio, a first-year accounting student, said that he prefers parks for group studying. The park is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Another option close to campus is Zero X. This medium-sized café is popular among college-age people.

“It can get crowded at some times and may be too loud for studying,” said Tan Tran, a third-year electrical engineering student.

“But it can provide a cool, contemporary atmosphere to study in.”

Drinks and snacks at Zero X are more costly in comparison to other cafés, thus earning two dollar signs on Yelp, but not so much that it breaks the bank.

Lollicup, a chain of small cafés, can also serve as a study location.

There are two locations near CPP, one in Walnut and one in Diamond Bar.

Lollicup stores are often slower and produce less noise, allowing for minimum distractions to students. The tables in the café can accommodate small to medium study groups.

Lollicup has lower-priced yet high-quality snacks and drinks that help keep students focused on their work.

The Diamond Bar location is located at 1122 S. Diamond Bar Blvd. and is open from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily while the Walnut location is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday, located at 1223 N Grand Ave.

Additionally, MJ Café and Teahouse in Walnut is ideal for study groups.

There are large tables that can accommodate larger study groups who want to work in a calm environment. Aside from indoor seating, the café also provides outdoor seating to avoid restaurant ambiance.

MJ Café and Teahouse is affordably priced for college students looking for cafe snacks or a full menu along with their studying.

The café is located at 20747 E. Amar Rd., Unit 6 in Walnut and is open from 11 a.m. to midnight daily.

When CPP students choose to do their off-campus or away-from-home studying, there is no shortage of locations nearby.
