Fashion Society to debut show ‘In Motion’

CPP’s brightest fashionistas, members of the Fashion Society, will be showcasing their work at their annual fashion show on Friday, March 22.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the show will begin at 6 p.m.

The show takes place outside of the Classroom, Laboratory and Administration (CLA) Building, where tickets will also be sold at the door.

This year’s theme and title of the show will be “In Motion.”

Kathia Nogueda, fourth-year apparel merchandising and management (AMM) student and president of the Fashion Society Club, explained that this theme represents a sense of moving forward.

“The underlying message is progression,” Nogueda said. “Not just in the fashion industry but in society and in the world.”

Opposed to last year’s show “Hacienda” that had a Western take, this year’s “In Motion” will bring out a metallic feel, according to Justin Foster, first-year AMM student and social media manager for the Fashion Society.

“What we wanted to go for was a minimalistic production,” Foster said. “Meaning no big stage, it doesn’t have to be all of this fancy lighting, fancy stage and everything.”

The show is entirely student-based. This includes designers, producers and models.

To prepare for the event, students put in long hours of hard work, including promoting and fundraising for the event.

However, the most important factors in making this show a success are collaboration and communication among each other. Creating a sense of community allowed everyone to have a say in what is best for the event, for the sake of their triumphs.

Now that the event approaches, students are excited to see the outcome of their countless hours of devotion to what they love most.

“I’m excited for everything to fall together,” Nogueda said. “Just, you know, how the friends and families come and enjoy the ride.”

To Foster, it is a way for his club to put together something incredible through simplicity.

“The message we want to convey is that students at Cal Poly are able to create a high-produced fashion show without all of the glitz and glamour,” Foster said.

Some will say that fashion is a way of conveying a message without speaking at all. Like other arts, people utilize this as a tool for change.

The Fashion Society will be putting forth a movement through their work and sharing that within the community.

It will be interesting to see what these students have in the works.

Coco Chanel always said that simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance, and maybe this is exactly what they were going for, a courageous act towards something bigger.
